Free AVG no longer free!!!

Hello all. No doubt zillions of you will have encountered the AVG bombshell on screen saying it will no longer be free from 31 May. (1) PLEASE can anyone point me to a substitute that is free? & (2) Does the firewall that comes with the Virgin Media broadband offer adequate protection without having to purchase Norton, Panda, McAfee or the like. Thanks SF.

Re: Free AVG no longer free!!!

I think you can get a free edition of AVG 8. Try here. Actually, I've paid for a full version and I tried out AVG 8. I had several problems with it and am still using 7.5. If I can't get the updates for 7.5 I'll be forced to switch to something else. With AVG 8 I was getting an error message when I closed the computer and also it wouldn't play nice with Spywareblaster. Hope this helps,

    Chris (Hunt)

One alternative is Avast! Antivirus. I've been using it for about two years now and it's a good product. If you go searching The Lounge, you might see a post or two about false positives, etc. but that kind of stuff happens to all of 'em and shouldn't deter you. On question 2, I still rely on Zone Alarm and don't have any problems with it.

Free AVG is still free as V8

It has already been pointed out that what AVG are saying is that you must upgrade from AVG AntiVirus v7.5 to AVG AntiVirus v8 to continue to receive AV updates. The new user interface is a considerable improvement, I would suggest.

As for PC Guard as supplied by Virgin Media, last time I investigated this (a couple of years ago) it was a fairly nondescript package from a virtually unknown supplier of AV. But better than nothing. I put ZoneAlarm Internet Security on one PC instead of the PC Guard, and have ZoneAlarm free firewall and AVG 8 free on most of the others.

Thank you gentlemen for your various answers. Please forgive me if I am missing something but when I clicked on the "Download" tab, the next window, (shown in the attachment) states a fee of 39.99 Sterling is required. Am I mistaken or does this imply it is not free? Regards Don.

When I click on the link provided by Cah in his <post#=712,735>post 712,735</post#> I go to the site that offers a free version of AVG. Give his link a try and then click on Download AVG Free 8.0. It seems to work just fine.

ps: I meant to post a pic of what I see on the website.....so here it is......

Skitterbug has already repeated where you have to go.

Please keep in mind that companies like Grisoft (the makers of AVG) provide the free version as a public service but also as a means of attracting paying customers. So they usually make it easier to find the commercial version of their products than the free version. This may be annoying, but I think it's understandable. You have to be alert though.

Sincere apologies guys, I think I get the message now. Seems a strange tack to take but I can see what Hans is inferring in his comments about AVG making the paid version stand out first. I hope I don't encounter the same problem that Cah mentioned in post number 712,735, all be it he was referring to the paid version but I suspect both the free and paid versions will have the same wheels within wheels. Thanks again friends for your expertise and patience. Don

(Edited by Argus on 30-May-08 17:02. Added info. and link to other post.)
(1) "... can anyone point me to a substitute that is free ..."

I haven't followed the links in the screenshot, but you probably should be able to get same info. there.

However, the AVG Free site is clear on this issue; there is an AVG Free 8.0. AVG Free 8.0 came 24 April, a little after the non-free edition.

See: AVG Free - Download antivirus and antispyware software for Windows XP and Vista

From time to time when AVG do major updates (we have seen this before, posted in the Lounge) they will discontinue updates to older software (in this case 31 May), not the same as there will be no Free edition.

    (2) Can you give more information about the ISP supplied firewall?
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
NB: See my <post:=713,596>post 713,596</post:>; information at the AVG Free Forum mention that the end of support/updates for AVG Free 7.5 is 31 December 2008.
