Attachments (XP Prof SP2 )

Since installing AVG 8 every email is arriving with a paper clip showing but there are no attachments accompanying them. I have encountered this idiosyncrasy before but can't remember how I rectified it, assistance please. Regards S F

See Stop AVG adding an attachment to every email in Outlook Express for step-by-step instructions with screenshots.

Hi Hans. Thanks for the response... when I clicked on the AVG icon [version 7]in the Sys Tray it opened the Control Panel but now it opens the one shown in the attachment. How do I get the control panel to open please. Thanks SF.

Sorry Hans if you are bewildered, not as much as I am can tell you. I opened the link Cah mentioned in post 712735, repeated by Skitterbug and downloaded what was offered so if some other version has taken up residence I can't explain why. I know you mentioned post 671 662 [which I have not yet viewed, forgot how to steer to it ]
so is it worth uninstalling the AVG that has take root and try again hoping version 8 moves in? Yours hopefully SFox

I thought you had AVG 8?

Does the thread starting at <post:=671,662>post 671,662</post:> help?

The reference in my previous reply is a clickable link, so you can view the post by simply clicking on the link.

Added later: oops, sorry. I see that I goofed up so that it was *not* a clickable link. It is now.

Hi Hans I take it you mean the six digit number in this line of text! [ Does the thread starting at Post: 671,662] help? ]
Well, forgive me if I'm inept but as you will see from the line of text I have pasted above (in brackets) which was copied
directly from your reply, does not appear as a link in blue bold text otherwise I would have instantly clicked on it knowing
it was a hyperlink. For some bizarre reason I have just hit the "Back" button and the six digit number is now a link so I
will peruse the thread it points to and see if it enlightens me. Otherwise, I may uninstall whatever version of AVG is on
my HD & try again. Many thanks for your prompt replies. I am off out now but will certainly let you know how things go
KInd regards SF

Sorry about that, I noticed that I had made a mistake after posting my reply that claimed it was a clickable link. I have corrected it since then, so it should work now.

Re: Attachments (XP Prof SP2 )

Hello Hans, sorry I'm back again. I was amazed to discover that the post you suggested I revert to was in fact sent in by Silver Fox [me] and having read your reply I note this phrase: -..... In Windows, select Start | (All) Programs | AVG Free Edition | Control Center. To somewhat complicate the issue I followed that sequence and (see attachment) the Grisoft download is off the screen though I can just activate it by hovering the cursor near the edge. I know this is another issue but seeing it is tied to current question, can you tell me why the frame should be so low as not to show all the programs installed? You will also see that instead of -as you suggest- the uppermost item reading AVG Control Panel it reads "AVG Free Tray Icon" which when clicked, opens the frame I sent in post 712915. I suspect performing a System Restore to last week would revert me back to the AVG 7 edition which WOULD show the Control Panel, is that worth a try then a fresh download of AVG 8 maybe. Regards SF

Dave,

I don't have AVG myself, so I don't think I'm the right person to give advice here. I hope that someone else will have a useful suggestion.

Re: Attachments (XP Prof SP2 )

Just stumbled onto this thread - I came to the Lounge looking for the paperclip problem and hopefully a solution. I was rewarded by finding this thread. I went to the link that was provided early in this thread, and read the proposed solution at that site. I realized that it was providing a solution for an earlier version of AVG than is now available to those who will download it (ver 8).
So I made a note of the steps, opened my current AVG application, and looked around for comparable dialogs mentioned in the solution made for the ver 7.somethingorother.
I found what I was looking for, and set check marks as needed. Then I sent myself an email to see if I solved my problem. Wha-La. Success.
Here is what I did: opened AVG, clicked on Tools in the menu bar, clicked on Advanced settings, clicked on E-Mail Scanner, set check marks in the With attachments only boxes, as needed. Clicked Apply, clicked OK. Closed the application.

Hi Flavet, good to make your acquaintance. I was quite pleased to see [as Hans implied] someone come along who was familiar with AVG and after following the sequence of clicks as your good self, sent myself an email but it still came with a paper clip. Please see attachment to see if I have missed something.

PS. I read on another forum that the said paper clips should be left showing but sadly, the contributor gave no explanation as to why - which is a pity because, as an expert - he must have had good reason for suggesting it.

Regards S Fox.

Re: Attachments (XP Prof SP2 )

Sorry, do not know what to suggest. Your display looks just like mine as far as I can tell. There may be something set differently on another one of the AVG screens that may be causing you to continue to see a paperclip.
I happen to currently be using two different email clients. I sent my test email from the second ISP to my Outlook Express email setup. I do not know how you did your testing. Maybe you can get a friend to send you a plain email. Of course, by now you probably have received things in the normal course of a day's goings on. I really do not understand why this has not worked for you.

Hello again Flavet. I'm glad to say that after clearing the check circles then ticking them again, the majority of emails are now arriving without the paper clip though for some unknown reason a selective few still have them shown though there is no attachment with the email. The one I sent myself was from the O.E. server but I just sent another from my Hotmail account and it had none so it seems to have done the trick. Thanks for your contribution. Regards S Fox

Glad to help. I need help myself more than I can contribute to someone else. That is what life is all about.
