Word 2000 supports opening and saving HTML documents.

The Save As Web Page option in Word 2000 stores Office-specific tags in the HTML file. If you want to strip these, you can download and install the Office 2000 HTML Filter 2.0 (in later versions, this filter is built into Word).

Word 2000 also might have a web options dialog to save pages that will work in Firefox. In Word 2003 this appears under Tools > Options..., General tab. If so, have your friend clear (uncheck) the checkbox for "Rely on VML" to avoid problems with browsers other than IE.
