Link changing from relative to absolute (Word 97 on network)

I'm trying to set up a link within a word document to a Visio chart, and I want it defined as relative, like this:

LINK Visio.Drawing.5 "GraphicsSubunits.vsd" d

I can enter the field okay, but when I update fields, it gets changed to absolute. Like this:

LINK Visio.Drawing.5 "NCS099_DATA_SERVERDATADATAPOLPLANGENERALDaleGraph icsSubunits.vsd" d

    Any ideas?
    Dale

I am by no means one of yer gurus, but I don't think this is possible.

Annoying isn't it? I'll watch the reponses with interest.

Frankly, I've never heard of "relative" links in Word docs. Why do you need them to be "relative"? Perhaps that will shed some light and we can help better.

With the INCLUDEPICTURE field it is acceptable to edit it so that 'c:garbagegarbagegraphicsthis.bmp' becomes 'graphicsthis.bmp'. I find this very useful when it comes to moving documents between drives/machines/etc. Word97 might think that it can update all the paths successfully, but this is not my experience.

Mr Lacey simply asked if the same was possible with LINK field.

    Hi Dale,

It is my understanding that if the images are placed in the same folder that the document is placed in or a subfolder, they will be relative links.

This functions correctly in a test environment, however I haven't experimented with it in a network environment.

Aha, well, thanks. When I created manuals (and I don't anymore), I never used fields (didn't know about them then). I just copied everything to the folder on my hard drive and gave the client a readme file with the CD. Sometimes, they wanted to open from CD. Back then, there weren't RWs, so we had to burn a disk with my graphics folder, and then burn the new disk with the docs and the graphics. Seems I'm really getting away from being a user lately. Gotta keep up here at WOPR and others.

    Hi Dale,

You should be able to place the images in subfolders as well.

    Thanks, BAM

But now we've gone full circle (or have I missed something).

Yes, I can create a field pointing to "Subdocsfilename", but as soon as I update it Word changes it to "FullpathSubdocsfilename".

And if I display fields and edit the full path out, it gets reinserted each time I update fields.

    Hi Dale,

Do you get relative links if the document and Visio drawings are in the same folder?
