Default Settings-Paragraph and Font (2007 Professional/SP1)

We run on XP, and and when we change and save our default settings for Word, they always switch back to Calibri 10 with line spacing of Multiple 1.15 and 12 pts. between lines. Help! (P.S. I despise this version of Office Suite, so any words of encouragement or pointing out its merits after a year of wanting to throw it out the window would be welcome.)

In the old days, we would manually open Normal.dot and edit the Page Setup and styles there to have them apply to all new blank documents. Can that still be done in Word 2007?

If you can tell me how to get to it, I will try that and see if it works. Thank you!

(Edited by DaveA on 30-May-08 07:38. Added attachment)
With Word open, look for the little arrow in the lower right corner of each "Title Bar" and then click it. This will open the settings pane for that grouping. There is the standard "Default" button near the bottom. This works just like it has done in all of the earlier versions of Word.

Re: Default Settings-Paragraph and Font (2007 Prof

That's what I've done, many times, and it keeps undoing itself--reverting to the Calibri and funky line spacing. Any other ideas? Unfortunately, in this version, it won't work for very long. Just until I save the settings, use them, and then when I reopen Word later in the day to do something else, I need to do it all again. I thought there was a place I could go to fix something on a more hidden level that would be permanent. This is a very strange situation.

Usually the Normal.dot (and hopefully the Normal.dotx/dotm) file will be in the main templates folder under:

Cocuments and SettingsusernameApplication DataMicrosoft

If this folder is not visible, you can use the Tools>Folder Options> View dialog in either My Computer or Windows Explorer to turn on viewing of hidden folders.

Thanks, again. Unfortunately, this didn't work, either. I'm at a loss for what to do except just save a document the way I want it to my desktop. I appreciate your attempts to help me fix this annoying little problem.

The above process works on my 2007 system.

Are you sure that you are clicking the Default button and selecting YES in the default pane?

Do NOT open a document, Start up word, just have "Document 1" one open and make the changes in the New Font window and then select the default button and save the default settings. Exit Word, do not save the Document 1 file, then open Word again, and for NEW documents you should have the new default.

Remember that this will NOT apply to existing documents, as you will need to Change each of them to the new font and any other settings that you make.

Yup, DaveA, I have always selected what I wanted for settings, hit Default, and hit Yes to save it. It keeps resetting itself. I did everything just as you said. Should I just give up and try reinstalling? But, come to think of it, our outside consultant pc guys don't want us to do that because now MS only lets you install your software so many times before it's no good (what's up with that?!) Sorry - frustrated by the big promises of this software and the dismal delivery. Your help is appreciated.

"our outside consultant pc guys don't want us to do that because now MS only lets you install your software"
This may because of a site licenses because I have installed my Office 2007 about 10 times without and problems. I do a lot of Beta testing and rebuild my machine a lot.

As for those "big promises " I know of none made by MS that are not working, but the learning of the new interface is another story. The more I use 2007 the more I seem to like it more.

Now, for your defaults issue, you must have some setting that is NOT allowing the Normal template to be updated. Check with these "outside consultant pc guys" and see if they have protected the templates.

I will check with my "outside consultant pc guys" and see if they have done just that. I'd be curious to know how they did that, though, since I installed my own software rather than waiting for them to get to me. Thanks, again. Your suggestion gives me hope! I will try to open my mind to this new software before they change it again on me! I was a power user on all versions before, and now I feel like I've had both of my electronic legs removed some days.

Re: Default Settings-Paragraph and Font (2007 Prof

I changed my Normal.dotm by modifying the Normal style of a regular document and clicking the radio button the says "New documents based on this template". Later, I found the Manage styles button (third from the left on the bottom of the Styles pane).

On the Set defaults tab, you can set the font, size, position, spacing, and color. If you intend to use themes, leave your font choice at the ones with the plus in front. If you want the changes applied to your Normal.dotm, click the radio button before New documents ... . I don't know that it is necessary, but in my Normal.dotm I made sure that the Normal style and the default settings were the same -- probably just me being tidy. Although in regular documents I change the Normal style regularly with no problems.

Re: Default Settings-Paragraph and Font (2007 Prof

I am using Word 2007 on an XP SP3 machine. I move around alot. I am an instructor at 3 different campuses. I've created a normal.dotx template to my flashdrive. When I go to a school machine I copy the my normal.dotx template from my flashdrive with my custom settings to ...AppData/Microsoft/Templates and overwrite the existing Normal.dotx template. When I create a new doc based on Normal, I should get my default settings. This worked fine with earlier versions of Word and with the current and earlier versions of Windows. Now, the new replaced Normal.dotx does not reflect my default settings. Did MS change something with the normal template that causes this to no longer work?

I don't have Office 2007, but I think the default template is Normal.dotm, not Normal.dotx.

Hans is correct (as usual). It's Normal.dotm.

I, too, have used both methods outlined in this thread to manage my defaults with no problems.

OfficeQueen, do you have any add-ins that might be interfering with saving Normal? If you turn on the option to prompt before saving Normal, does it?
