Mail Merge Data Name with $ (Office 2003)

If I open a Word document that already has a Mail Merge data source associated with it and I choose to change the data source file, I'm first promped to select the new file (an Excel file) and then I'm prompted with a "Selected Table" dialog box that lists 2 items which are identical except that one name ends in a dollar sign ($). What is the meaning of the dollar sign?

This new Excel file has one more record than the original data source file and if I choose the non-$ name, the new (last) record is not merged. If I choose the name with the $ that new record is included in the merge!

    Any help will be appreciated.

The name with the $ is a worksheet.
The name without a $ is probably a defined name that refers to a specific range on the worksheet. You can check this by opening the workbook in Excel and looking at Insert | Name | Define.

    Hans,

Yes, you are correct! I don't use Excel very much and I received this setup from someone else and didn't know about that a range had been defined.

    Thanks,
    Bill
