Very strange date formatting (Excel 2003)

I have encountered something very odd....when I enter the date June 11, 2008 (no matter how it is formatted) it always makes the column very wide...autofit column doesn't correct it....I have even tried formatting as text, or general, and typing in "11-Jun-08" or "June 11, 2008" but not matter what my entry is, it always comes back to 11-Jun-08 (which is fine) but makes the column very wide...the moment I delete the date and use column autofit, the column comes back to its 'normal' width......any ideas, anyone?

Is this specific to a particular worksheet? workbook?

Please post a stripped down version of the problem workbook with details on the problematic range.

Actually, Don, I was able to work around it..and it is not a problem in the 2009 workbook, so I'll leave it as is, rather than use people's time offering help on something that I have managed to work around and that I do not expect to surface again...but thank you very much.
