Where is 'About...?' (All)

In previous versions of Windows, you could check what version, service pack etc you were on by opening My Computer (or any folder) and on the Help menu selecting About Windows. I can't work out how to get at the same information in Vista. I'm sure there must be something obvious I'm missing.

OK, thanks. I was missing something fairly obvious, then. (Though if the old way wasn't broke, why did they fix it?)

I wonder if you clicked something wrong, Ian, for I get THIS screen if I do what you said you did.

    Re: Where is 'About...?' (All)

My problem was I couldn't find where to find "About Windows" so I could click it. It used to be on the Help menu in XP when you opened any folder, but now there doesn't even seem to be a Help menu as such. (I don't use Vista myself, but this is on my wife's laptop.)

Just as a matter of interest, do you get the properties window if you run

winver

    from the Run box?

(If you don't have Start/Run, try Winkey+R or see Vista: Make the Run Box Appear on the Start Menu.)

Yes I do get that, and it comes up with a dialog box with the information I wanted.

When I look in Control Panel, as in Doc's first screen shot, I don't see the traditional menus (File, Edit, View, etc that he seems to have.) Where is the option to turn those on?

It sounds like some setting in your wife's Vista has been changed if you don't see the command menus. I don't know where the setting might be, so how about looking at Folder Options, View and check the attachment. Any Windows screen I check has the Help, About selection just as in XP.

Try, Organize, Folder and Search Options.

To add the Menu bar try, Organize, Layout, Menu Bar

You will find all kinds of stuff under Organize.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

A much easier way than Dave's suggestion, as good as it is, is to open any folder and press the "Alt" key which will display the old style Menubar. Pressing the "Alt" key again will close the Menubar. This also works in Internet Explorer 7. I believe with Dave's method, the Menubar will be displayed by default after you enable it.

Thanks - I keep learning something new. (That's what's so good about the Lounge!) Though I'm happy to have the Menubar displayed by default.

Here's a tidbit that might interest you, just in case you lose it: SIW will tell you your serial number.
