    Find All Function (2000)

I want to find and highlight all of a certain character (a space, actually) in a paragraph. But the Find function only offers a "next," not a "find all." I know Replace must offer this, but I still see only the "next" button. Clearly I'm missing something.

    Re: Find All Function (2000)

The Find tab of the Find and Replace dialog has a check box "Highlight all items found in:". If you tick this (you must have entered something in the "Find what" box), the caption of the "Find Next" button changes to "Find All".
The Replace tab doesn't have such a check box. Instead, it has "Replace" and "Replace All" buttons.

I don't find that. The closest is "highlight" in the format options, but that has to do with searching. I attached the dialog box screen capture.

    It's possible that we've forgotten the specific features of Word 2000. Been a few years. <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>

Based on old screen shots, I think this was not available in Word 2000. Word 2002 added the feature of multi-selection, so it might have been introduced at that time.

I fear that Jefferson is right - "Highlight all items found in"/"Find All" was probably introduced in Word 2002. I skipped from Word 97 to Word 2002 and never used Word 2000.

Thanks, guys. Looks like I'm doomed to an upgrade. I use the feature to shrink sentences without affecting character spacing, which is important to me.

Most if not all things that can be done with Find All in the Find tab can also be accomplished with Replace All in the Replace tab.

    Hans...

I tried that, but couldn't find a way to replace a space in 12pt with a space in 10pt. It just doesn't find anything. Maybe there's a way.

    It works like this:
    <UL><LI>Select Edit | Replace or press Ctrl+H.
<LI>Click More in the Replace dialog.
<LI>Click in the 'Find what' box.
<LI>If the 'No Formatting' button is enabled, click it.
<LI>Enter a space in the 'Find what' box.
<LI>Select Format | Font... at the bottom of the dialog.
<LI>Select 12 in the Size list box. Don't specify anything else.
    <LI>Click OK.
<LI>Click in the 'Replace with' box.
<LI>If the 'No Formatting' button is enabled, click it.
<LI>Enter a space in the 'Replace with' box.
<LI>Select Format | Font... at the bottom of the dialog.
<LI>Select 10 in the Size list box. Don't specify anything else.
    <LI>Click OK.
<LI>Click 'Replace All'.[/list]That's it - it takes considerably longer to write it down than to do it!

"That's it - it takes considerably longer to write it down than to do it!"

I'll still need to eat Wheaties for breakfast before tackling it. What started all this is that I had a long document with some rogue tabs in it that prevented Atlantis from reducing the first line indent from .5" to .25" (I use Atlantis for documents to print, and Word for documents to transmit electronically--length difference). Even with the tabs removed, I had garbage. So I made the indent change in Word--would not hold in Atlantis--but couldn't quickly dispose of all orphans before printing. Accomplishing the space highlighting in Atlantis is super simple, so hopefully it is in Word 2002, as well.

    Hans...

Those are great! I wrote 327 pages today. Overheated my keyboard and had to order a water-cooled model. Then I realized that the Diamond Shreddies are just square Shreddies turned 45 degrees. I felt so ripped off by Madison Avenue that I've gone into a writer's slump. Win some, lose some.
