Spam email with unusual contents

We are getting spam text emails whose contents consist only of some words, and an apparently-malformed URL.

Examples:
I love you madly! http://uvitx.
or
Be mine this afternoon, but not after 16:00 http://pgqrsh.

The letters after the '//' and before the '.' are alphabetic, usually four to six in number, and have no inherent meaning. I have looked at the 'source' of the email, but there is no clickable link, no HTML, nothing else (that I can see...)

Can anyone guess what their purpose is, other than to annoy?

(We also get lots of 'IP address' URLs, like http://123.45.67.89/ but those would work...)

Could be just testing to see if they have a live address. Have you copied the info from the source and pasted it into something like WordPad that shows links ???

As it would be unlikely that spam emails are individually written, I would suspect that someone has flunked creating software that creates the random text / url / email address.

Have you checked the VB/VBA or Access forums to see if anyone is having difficulty creating mass emails from a database that includes your email address?

Seriously, your thought seems very likely [bad guys isn't always so bright]. And finding a live address, as Doc says, is also something they do try.

Now the emails are appearing with an appropriate URL, such as
http://uvitx.asksister.com

I'm not sure whether to be pleased that they've now got their SPAM-creating software right, or annoyed that they've now got their SPAM-creating software right!

The question is, did they get it from reading this thread?

I suspect they had lots of complaints about the low quality of the links in their spam, so they had to pull their collective socks up!
