    Intel E2180 vs AMD 46200+

I know the answer is likely to be "personal preference" but anyone care to offer an opinion on which of these two CPUs is the 'best'?

    Intel Pentium Dual Core E2180 2GHz, 2 x 1MB Cache
    or
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 46200+, 2.2GHz, 2 x 512KB L2 Cache

The end use will be in a simple system for my father. OS will be XP Home. The only heavy duty work the PC will have to perform will be off loading images from a Canon 400 digital SLR. I can't see my father ever being able to cope with hacking at RAW images (even Photoshop Elements is likely to be confusing for him) so apart from what ever image handling software came with the camera I only plan on installing Google Picasa and IrfanView.

OK, so no one has any opinions. I think I'll go with the Intel because if I understand the current sate of play in the Intel vs AMD race, Intel have the edge.

It is very difficult to keep up with Intel's nomenclature for its processors. The specs for an E2180 are: "2.00 GHz clock speed, 800 MHz front-side bus, 1MB level 2 cache, 65 nm process, 64-bit support." The newer Core 2 line has one processor with similar specs (E4400, 2MB L2 cache) and also a range of new 45nm chips and virtualization features.

So I have no opinion, but I wouldn't buy the E2180 as a cutting edge product.

Thank you for your comment. It helps because although I knew the E2180 was far from the cutting edge, I hadn't realised it was part of the the older Dual-Core line rather than the current Core 2 Duo camp.

Anyone know anything about the AMD chip?

Meanwhile I need to Google more thoroughly.

    Hi Ken,

Check out Tom's Hardware: http://www.tomshardware.com/us/. They do a lot of CPU comparisons, plus other hardware comparisons too.
