    'Always Use ClearType' (2007)

I'm setting up my Word 2007 Options. What exactly is "Always Use ClearType" and should I leave it on?

ClearType is a technology for anti-aliasing screen fonts so that they have a less pixellated appearance; it became popular as people replaced their CRT displays with LCD displays. However, I think it makes text look fuzzy. If you try it for a day, you can form your own opinion. As far as I know, it is a personal preference that is not saved with the document.

Until recently, ClearType was a Windows level setting in the Display Control Panel. Now it is becoming available in individual applications. (I'm sure there is a logical reason for this, but it seems redundant to me.)

Thanks for the clarification...it doesn't sound like anything I need to ponder...

You can use the ClearType Tuner PowerToy for Windows XP (from Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP) or an online tuner (from Microsoft Typography, both for Windows XP and Windows Vista) to see which setting best suits you. As Jefferson wrote, it's very much an individual preference - he dislikes ClearType, I wouldn't want to use my PC without it any more.
