    CD drive (XP Home)

My CD drive quit working. It's a Samsung CD-R/RW SW-248F. When I tried to uninstall and reinstall I got the following error message: A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternative driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32). How do I fix it? I have the installation CD but can't use it because the CD drive doesn't work.

Try looking at Control Panel | Device Manager and see if there are any yellow "exclamation points" showing up under CDDVD devices or any other locations. If so, click on them and go to properties> update drivers.

Also in Control Panel | Administrative tools | Services, scan down the list of services that may pertain to the CD drive or optical drives to make sure they are enabled. If you see one disabled, right click on it, then properties. Under startup, use the drop down menu to set to automatic and OK out.

Yes, there is a yellow exclamation point showing up under CD/DVD devices at the Samsung CD-R/RW SW-248F file. I tried several times to update the driver and windows couldn't find it. I looked in Control Panel > System> services and found 2 that might pertain to the CD drive. IMAPI CD Burning. I started that. Creative Service for CD Rom Access and started that. Still don't have any cd drive.

You could try a Google with your drive details to look for a driver to download and install, or go direct to the vendor site to see if they have them available there (they should). The services are unlikely to do much before the drive is properly installled.

You could try to completely uninstall the CDDVD device from Device Manager and reboot to see what the OS comes up with when looking at the drive.

    Re: CD drive (XP Home)

I have uninstalled the CDrom drive successfully, shut down the computer, started the computer, the computer sees the new hardware, names it. that's all. I have done this multiple times, all with the same result. I've checked to see that anything to do with the cd drive is started and not disabled. I've tried repeatedly to download drivers, none of which work. I still get the same error message: "A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32). " I gave trying to fix the original cd drive. Bought a new Liteon DVD Writer and installed it. Same deal. The computer recognizes it. but gives me the same error message: "A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)." The cd drive does not appear in the list of drives in My Computer and hasn't since this problem began.
What's the fix? Where do I look for the driver that works?

    Re: CD drive (XP Home)

Your problem may be caused by software conflicts. Did you install or upgrade any CD/DVD burning software recently?

Try to uninstall CD/DVD burning programs one by one (Nero, Roxio, etc.) restarting computer after each uninstall, to see which program causing trouble.
Very often Roxio and Nero do not want coexist peacefully - choose one or another. If you install a burning program recently, try to upgrade it to the latest version first. Also check your license keys: using not genuine Nero license key may make your CD/DVD-RW drive unusable.

In addition to Kaplinb's suggestions, have a look at this article . This covers Error Codes 19, 31, 32 and 41. Scroll down to "Methods to resolve the problem".

    Re: CD drive (XP Home)

Thank you for the information that provided the solution to my problem. I ran the Guided Help program, rebooted, and my new cd drive reappeared (with a different drive letter). Everything works. I did uninstall Nero because it looked to me like it used up too much space, there wasn't much on it that I'd really use, and something was locking up my computer. After I uninstalled Nero that problem went away, too. Thanks.
