    Startup Program (Vista Ultimate SP1)

I've started using Autoruns in addition to MSCONFIG and Windows Defender Software Explorer. I found this entry in Autoruns (see attached). The publisher is: (Not verified) Microsoft Corporation, and the Image Path is: c:windowssystem32soundschemes.exe.

It does not appear in the Startup tab of MSCONFIG, nor does it appear as a Startup program in Windows Defender Software Explorer.

I'm puzzled. What is this and why is it started at boot-up?

    Cheers,
    Regards,
    PaulB

See Windows Vista Ultimate about Windows Ultimate Extras.
One of the recent additions to the Extras is a couple of new sound schemes - see Windows Vista Team Blog : New Ultimate Extras Released.

Thanks, Hans. I guess I should have phrased my question differently. What puzzles me is why a sound scheme comes with an executable and why is that executable launched at every startup?

Seems very strange to me, almost bordering on the suspicious.

    Cheers,
    Regards,

I don't know whether Soundschemes.exe is actually run - is it listed in the Processes tab of Task Manager (if mere mortals are allowed to run that in Windows Vista)?

I don't know if it runs either. I can't see it listed as a process. It could launch, do something, then close down. I was lead to believe that Autoruns lists startup programs, so I assume it launches at boot-up. A Google search leads to a lot of speculation as to what it is, some along the lines of we-don't-know-what-this-is-but-for-$59.99-our-Super-Duper-Whatzit-Remover-will-get-rid-of-it-for-you.

AutoRuns is a bit of a Swiss Army Knife - it lists everything that starts automatically, but also a lot of other things that aren't really running programs or processes.

But I admit that I don't know how the SoundSchemes Ultima Extra works either...

    Try unchecking it in Autoruns.
See if you note anything drastic. You can always recheck it to reenable it.
( just took a look in Autoruns on my system and the only mention of Vista Extras is the DreamScene Aero )
