In a list or not? (Excel 2003)

I have a long list of assets in a data table. I have another list of assets with a specific characteristic. I'm trying to figue out how to do a formula in a cell that returns "X" or blank if the data table asset number is on the characteristic list. Trying to avoid vlookups and #values and error testing IF statements in favor of a simpler approach. TYIA.

You'll have to do some kind of error testing.
Let's say the characteristic list is in A1:A100, and the general list is in D1300.
Enter the following formula in E1:

=IF(ISNA(MATCH(D1,$A$1:$A$100,0)),"X","")

and fill down to E300.

=IF(COUNTIF(characteristiclist_range,asset)>0,"X", "")
will do it, if I understand you.
