    Having Trouble Opening IE (IE6/SP2)

Lately, I am having increasing difficulty opening IE. (I have no trouble opening Outlook Express.)

I can no longer access IE by clicking on the desktop shortcut or the office toolbar or through my keyboard; in fact, to get it to open even through the "Start" menu, this time I had to shut down the computer, unplug it all, start it up again, and not open Outlook Express first.

Also, lately, when I shut the computer down, I get a message that the computer is trying to shut down iexplore.exe, but it won't respond. I click End Now. I seem to have to do that for each attempt I've made to open IE -- sometimes 4 or 5 times -- before the computer will shut down.

Any help out there? I'm desperate! Thanks.

When was the last time you did any system maintenance (Disk Cleanup, Defrag, etc.) ??

Well, never! However, I started with a brand-new hard drive in February. Prior to that, I used this computer for (literally) years without doing that kind of system maintenance. Not a techie, I fear!

    Microsoft has some suggestions. The first suggestion is to load IE7. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer in Windows XP (MSKB 318378)

Does the lounge recommend "upgrading" to IE7?

Thanks, jscher2000, for the link to the Microsoft suggestions. I never think of looking there; Woody's Lounge is always my first stop!

Yes, I definitely recommend upgrading to Internet Explorer 7. It's more secure than Internet Explorer 6, and it has some attractive new features such as tabbed browsing (as was already available in FireFox).

Yes, the initial bugs in IE7 have been shaken out and it adds the convenient "shrink to fit" feature for printing. (There are other enhancements, of course, but that is the one that seemed most lacking in IE6 compared with the competition.)
