trouble displaying a date (Excel 2003)

    contents
    A1 =TODAY()
    A2 =A1&" is Ed's birthday" formula

    right now the formula in A2 outputs "39611 is Ed's birthday" w/o the quotes
    what I want is "6/12/08 is Ed's birthday" w/o the quotes

    what do I need to change the formula to?

    One option is to change the formula to

    =TEXT(A1,"m/d/yy")&" is Ed's birthday"

    Another option is to change the formula to

    =A1

    or

    =TODAY()

    and to specify a custom number format

m/d/yy" is Ed's birthday"

    in the Number tab of Format | Cells...
