    Sharing Styles (2003)

I've created an outline numbering scheme using styles. I created the styles, then linked the outline numbering scheme to these new styles. The problem is, I want to share this outline numbering with my "team." I thought I could just put a shortcut to this new "global template" in each workstations Word startup folder and the styles and outline numbering would be available to everyone. That didn't happen. I've read many posts here about Style Sheets and updating styles in attached templates... I'm confused. Is this possible?

Try saving the styles to a template. The send the template to each of your co-workers and have them save it to their template directory, or put it in a location on your server and have each of them point their User Group Templates to the directory where you saved the template. Look in Word's options on the File Location tab to find out where the templates are stored. If you want these styles to always be available, use the Organizer (in the dialog at Tools > Macros) to copy them to the Normal template.

I want the styles to be available for any document, not just a particular document created based on that template.

Once a document is created, its universe of styles is fixed and changes to the environment have no effect (unless there is an automatic update of some kind). I think you will have to provide a macro to copy the custom styles into the ActiveDocument.

I'm working on that. Any "code" ideas?

If you add those styles to the Normal.dot template, that is the base that Word uses for all new documents. The styles will be available in anything new that they create. For previously created documents, use the Organizer to copy the styles into the current document. Word will ask if you want to overwrite the styles that are there. Say yes. You may need to reapply the styles to the document (unless they have different names than those in the document - at which point you just need to apply the styles to the text).

The CopyStylesFromTemplate method of a document lets you transfer all styles from a template to the document - see CopyStylesFromTemplate Method.

    Re: Sharing Styles (2003)

I do know this (although there is no way you could know what I know... <img src=/S/blackteeth.gif border=0 alt=blackteeth width=20 height=20> ) What I am trying to accomplish (I work with attorneys, after all) is to make it simple enough for a monkey (no disrespect intended). They have lots of documents already created and many more in their future. Some will be created starting from the Normal.dot and some will be created from other templates. Most will be "cloned" from existing documents. They could probably handle clicking one macro button to populate their new, current document with the styles they need. But there is no way they will be able to use the organizer to copy their styles to the document they are currently using. And another reason not to just populate Normal.dot with these styles is if Normal.dot becomes corrupt and Word creates a new one. Now their styles are not there. I think a macro of some sort is the answer, as was suggested. I do seem to recall having done this once....
    Thanks.

Worked like a charm.... I knew there had to be an easier answer then the way I was going about it.
