I wonder what's happend to....

Ok I don't post much, but I do read many posts and learn, learn, learn from the contributors. There are certain names and loungers who post regularly and so when they stop posting it becomes quite noticeable. While I respect others privacy it would be nice to know that nothing bad had happened to them or maybe they've just moved on. I remember a while ago for instance that one lounger disappeared only to make a post several months later to explain that he'd been in a shooting accident! But he posted back to say he was well and recovered thankfully.

People change careers, retire, become ill, pass away, disappear for unknown reasons, some are banned from the Lounge for inappropriate behavior, some leave the Lounge because they disagree with some policy or practice or are offended by an admonishment; all kinds of reasons. In my case, for example, I'll probably slow down my activity in the Outlook forum because I switched jobs to a company converting to Lotus Notes.

    Jeff,
    I think that's not a bad idea.

Maybe a new forum ( WHERE IS ) so you could post a particular loungers name and IF information is available to the general population, anyone could answer with polite decorum!

I know I have wondered the same about a few names from the past myself.

I do appreciate the sentiment - it's nice that Loungers care about the absence of other Loungers. But I don't think that we'll create a "Missing Loungers" forum. One of the problems is: who determines which information should be public?

"Lotus Notes" - my commiserations .

A great product, but only if effectively supported by knowledgeable techies and policy that allows it to be used effectively. I've only ever worked in one organisation that provided that, and even they have now switched to Outlook for user convenience. All other implementations have been a struggle, usually even disallowing creation of personal agents.

I guess there's always the personal profile, that a departing / absentee Lounger could update to keep others informed. Although a bit tricky when an absentee?

I sort of went AWOL for a while, but never got around to doing anything like that since I was always going to get back "real soon now". Only thing is family, work, & other non-Lounge commitments kept getting in the way…

If you know in advance that you're going to be away or low-profile for a while (or even permanently), you could put a notice in your profile, disclosing as much or little about the cause as you wish.

But perhaps more often, something happens unexpectedly, and you are unable to let other Loungers know what happened. Or you may not wish them to know.

Re: I wonder what's happend to....

Apparently, there is no Lounge resign process that deletes the userid, profile and any other related info, so some people just stop signing in and never let the Lounge know that they have moved on. I guess this is why there are many more registered users than active users. Have you ever considered having userids disappear after some time of non use, like maybe 2 years. Having a resign process and a disappear-for-non-use policy would give a clue of what has happened to some users.

The present situation may not be ideal, but...

Some people like to log in because that gives them more options than visiting the Lounge anonymously, but they never post anything. There is no objection against that - there's no obligation to participate actively.

Other people do post actively, drop away for a while, then come back - sometimes after years of absence. Although they could, of course, create a new username (and sometimes they do), it's nicer if they can continue using their original username.

If we would delete users who have posts to their names, you'd see "This user is no longer in our database" if you clicked their name, which I find rather unsatisfactory.

It is not a hot issue for me, to be sure. My term "non use" was intended to signify not logging in and not simply a lack of posts. I was assuming you can record login activity.

    Thanks for explaining your reasoning.

Well, anyone who might have information regarding status of another lounger?
Granted a little discretion should be used but that's what mods should do anyway, no?

Re: I wonder what's happend to....

    Paul,

I have not posted a great deal, I originally joined Woody's Lounge in 1999 (I found an archived message welcoming me).
My first post was May 2001. I dropped off in a black hole for a few years due to ....... LIFE.

I came back in 2004 and found my account was deactivated - probably due to inactivity.. My new Registered on date is 18-Feb-04 00:57. Although I was not posting, I was reading the newsletters and boards, they help great information - just was not posting, so I did not logon.

Considering the resources of Woody's Lounge, I thank them for the wonderful job of keeping the lounge up and running.

As for the missing loungers, in addition to Hans suggestion, there is always the Scuttlebutt section we can use.
