    Help Tips (Word 2003/2007)

    Hi All
I am looking for a way of attaching "Help Tips" to paragraph headings in a Word Document. I am an advanced user but am struggling with this one. Using comments with Tracked Changes turned on is not an option. End Notes and Footnotes are also not an option because they would take up too much space at the end of each page. Does anyone know of any other method of achieving this.

Many thanks in anticipation of anyone's help/advice.

Look forward to hearing from you.

    Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

Normally, one would use comments for this, but you indicate that is not feasible. You might insert a text box in the margin, but with most documents there will be little room for text... I don't know of a convenient other way to do this.

You refer to "taking up space" and arguably that is all relative. Historically I have used bold, green, hidden formatting for instructional text. I ask users to display hidden text on screen but not to print it. So in this sense, the space taken up doesn't really count. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> However, it certainly isn't very elegant or compliant with modern UI conventions...

    Hi TK_Hussar,

You could insert a hyperlink pointing to itself and use the hyperlink hover text to display your tips. This will have the effect of giving the hyperlinked text the usual hyperlink formatting attributes, which may/may not be an advantage.

I would also look at this same method to put in simple one line help info.

Removing the hyperlink formatting after it has been applied (without removing the hyperlink) is as simple as Ctrl-Spacebar

There are two things you may need to consider if using the hyperlink method, however. (I've got Word 2002 here.)

Firstly, this displays "Click to follow link" or "CTRL + click to follow link" at the bottom of the ScreenTip box. I don't know if it's possible to prevent that - I've never found a way of doing so.

Secondly, the display of ScreenTips is determined by a "Tools | Options | View | Show" setting. I don't know if this is a global or a per-document setting, but it might be relevant if you plan to share your document with others.
