Sort text paragraphs A-Z (WinXP / Word 2003)

I have a list of academic publications, about 150 in all, typed into a word doc. They are in no particular order, and I need them alphabetically sorted by surname of first author. Will word let me do this sort? I had thought to copy everything into excel and sort it there. This should work since each item is a distinct paragraph, so the whole reference would paste into one cell. But can I do the same job more easily in word? Thanks in advance.

Word can sort paragraphs - the Sort command is in the Table menu but it works on paragraphs too. But it will only work if the paragraphs start with the author's surname.
