    icon view (windows xp)

I am in a folder looking at the ICON view and all the pictures are the same. I remember in on version of WINDOWS we could edit the Registry File go some where and change the setting in the view to %% or something like that and then the pictures would show on the folders rather then the generic view of some boat sunset scene?
I hope this question is understandable?

Why don't you switch to thumbnail view?

The trick that you remember (see for example Annoyances.org - Enable Iconic Preview of Bitmaps) has to be applied to each type of graphics file separately, while thumbnail view in Windows XP works for most graphics types "out of the box".

Icon view is not the same as thumbnail view.
