Fixing a Broken .PST File (Outlook 98)

I was trying to back up a user's email file (outlook.pst).

    1. I moved the file from C:WINDOWS to a network drive, but when I tried to open it, I got a message that it could not be opened because it was not a .PST file.

    2. I ran Inbox Repair Tool on the file, and it found 2 errors, but generated a 58K log file.

    3. After the file was "repaired", I opened it but there is nothing in it. The only folder within the .PST file is "Deleted Items", which is empty.

I do not have a backup of this file, which is 484 MB.

I have the original (broken) .PST file saved off, so I can try to repair a copy without corrupting it further.

Is there any other product out there that might be able to fix this file?

Any help would be, well, a life saver.

    Thanks in advance.

Try copying your backup to the original location of the PST. Then use Outlook's File-Import and Export to export a copy to the network.

Let us know how you go.

I can give that a try, but I am not too hopeful.

Whenever I try to access the broken .PST file, I get the following two error messages:

    Personal Folders:
Properties for this information service must be defined prior to use.

    Microsoft Outlook:
The file O:boboutlook.pst is not a personal folders file.

I hope the above jogs someone's brain.

Does ring a bell, and I don't think it bodes well for you.

Sounds similar to an incident, about 12 months ago, when the company's entire email data base was corrupted. Hope this isn't the case for you, but...

We ended up using an outside contractor to do the recovery, as this is highly specialised or at least beyond me. Even so, we lost about 60% of all emails, some mailboxes lost 100% of the contents.

Hopefully someone else may have an idea.

Try right clicking on the .pst file and go to properties, and uncheck read only. I've had this problem when moving or copying a .pst and magic - after you make it non read only, it wokrs!
