    Lost Profile (XP SP2)

When I log on to Windows, my icons my wallpaper are gone. I get the following message:
"Windows cannot locate your locally stored profile and is logging windows on with a temporary profile.
Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off. If the problem persists contact your network
    administrator."

Can someone help me get my profile back?

Are you logging in to a LAN (Local Area Network) with a roaming profile? If so, you should indeed do what the error message suggests: contact your network administrator.

This is a home laptop that suddenly does not show my icons etc. There's no LAN.

It might be worth you running CHKDSK C: /F /V /R and replying Y to the message "Do you want CHKDSK to run after a reboot?" (I'm paraphrasing). Allow up to an hour for the CHKDSK to run, especially if you have a large hard disk.

Also, see if there is now a folder in Documents and Settings like <yourusername>.<something> as well as <yourusername> - the ".<something>" may give a clue to the reason.
