File Opening problems (XP Pro SP2)

My PC has developed a problem. I have Office 2003 and Office 2007 installed because the various people I work for use both office systems. I set the defaults on my PC to use 2003. All has been working OK but suddenly things have changed. When I did a double click on an Excel filename (*.xls), Excel 2007 opened instead of Excel 2003. Word did not, and does not exhibit this behaviour; double clicking on a *.doc file opens Windows 2003.
I checked the XLS File Type within Folder Options; it appeared to use Excel 2003 as the Open script referred to Office11 - which I believe is Office2003. I couldn't stop the weird behaviour but eventually I noticed a Restore button in the Details for 'XLS' extension section. I clicked this and things have improved, but not totally. Double clicking on a *.xls file now opens Excel 2003 but once Excel has opened, I get a number of warning messages saying that it can't find various files (which don't seem to have sensible names - for example Cocuments.xls, and.xls, settingsbrianmy.xls and so on. Accepting the OK button for all these files eventuall results in the target file opening with Excel 2003. If I close this file immediately, I am prompted to choose if I want to save changes (although I have done nothing to the file)
Teh File Type for .xls files now has an Advanced button where the Restore button used to be; clicking this and selecting the Open action reveals that the script for the Open action of the .xls file type is :

    "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOFFICE11EXCEL.EXE" /e %1

Can anyone explain what's happened and how I can get back to 'normal', please?
    Thanks

The easiest way to get around this is to start the version of Excel that you want to use first, then open your workbooks. They should open in that version.

If you really want trouble-free use of both versions of Office, install them on different boot partitions or on different PCs. That way they don't bite each other.

Re: File Opening problems (XP Pro SP2)

I am using your suggested method ie opening the Excel version first and then opening the file from within it. This does have limitations, though, if I am sent a spreadsheet as a mail attachment; it means I have to save it before I can open it. I would like to get back to where I was with Excel, if possible.
Further investigation shows that the 'files' which Excel is saying does not exist are the portions of the full filename being opened.
So, say the actual target of the file is Cocuments and SettingsBrianMy DocumentsBrian's Filesfilename.xls
After double clicking on the filename, Excel reports that it can't open Document.xls, and.xls, SettingsBrianMy.xls, DocumentsBrian's.xls, and finally Filesfilename.xls
ie the parts of the full file address which are separated by spaces are each being seen by Excel as separate files to open before it opens the actual file, filename.xls
Can this behaviour be explained, please?
    Thanks

Re: File Opening problems (XP Pro SP2)

You should always save attachments instead of opening them directly from an e-mail message.

    About the filename problem: change

    "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOFFICE11EXCEL.EXE" /e %1

    to

    "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOFFICE11EXCEL.EXE" /e "%1"

The quotes around %1 tell Windows to interpret the path+filename as a single entity.

    As usual, many thanks.
I should have thought before posting - I ran Excel 2003 and did a Detect and Repair. This has fixed the problem.
Interestingly, in the light of your last posting, the code for the .XLS Open action now does not have a at the end at all. It looks like this :

    "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOFFICE11EXCEL.EXE" /e

Add another beer to buy when finally we meet.
    Thanks
