dial up connection failure (XP Home SP2)

I recently installed the free version of AVG on my neighbor's computer. Everything works OK except AVG will not automatically connect (or dial) when connecting for updates. Internet Explorer and Outlook Express will connect (dial up) automatically when activated, but AVG won't. I have the AVG option to auto connect a dial up, but it simply does not. So far I haven't been able to dig up anything on this from Google or Yahoo search although I find it hard to believe that this is an isolated case. The update will work OK if we first start up IE or OE to make the connection.

    Any suggestions?

When you set up AVG to Auto Connect, did it ask you enter the necessary connection info? Or just "auto connect?

    Suggestion: First start up OE, then update AVG. <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>

AVG has a dial up option where you check "Use Dial Up Connections" and under that an option button for "Automatically Open This Connectiion." Unfortunately, it doesn't.

Yes, an obvous solutionn is to first start IE or OE and let them initiate the dial-up connection, then run the AVG update. However, this requires manual updating whereas AVG is supposed to automatically update itself on a timed basis. So I'm trying to figure out why AVG won't auto connect.

    Sorry, Chuck.
I no longer use AVG and I don't have dial up ( thank goodness ) so I can't help any here. Maybe some other Lounger uses AVG and can pop in here to suggest something. <img src=/S/surrender.gif border=0 alt=surrender width=31 height=23>

Re: dial up connection failure (XP Home SP2)

    Hi Chuck,
First let me say that I at the moment do not use version 8 of AVG Free, or dial up, but I know about the dialog box you are talking about in AVG Update Manager.

I had a feeling I had seen something about dial up and AVG 8 at their AVG Free Forum ... and yes, there has been some talk. Obviously, first one do check firewall etc. since it is a new software, but that is not the problem here. AVG is.

When AVG Free version 8 came they had a "First Impressions"-thread, and some mentioned this, see this post (even if only briefly mentioned).

Then you have this thread, that summarize it all (about AVG 8 & dial up): The answer to a lot of update problems.

In essence (I quote from what appears to be an AVG Technologies support reply, there is no AVG support for the Free version):
<hr>"We would like to inform you that the dial-up connection is not fully supported by AVG 8 yet.

Our developers have prepared support for dial-up connection and it will be implemented in the next program update ...".<hr>
Seems like they left something out, when they prepared version 8 ...
And at last, there has been quite a lot of it, there are some dial up only systems out there:
Dialup connection fails (same poster as above)
AVG 8 failure to make dialup connection on update

So it's an AVG AV issue and not a Windows issue.

Sorry to say that there seems to be no immediate help. My advice, at the moment, would be to either use the manual update (or rather semiautomatic, since you do get it working once the connection is there, as compared to manually download updates and install them) as you and Bob has mentioned, or run AVG Free 7.5 (<!post=updates for 7.5 are still coming, not sure when they will end,713596>updates for 7.5 are still coming<!/post>) in anticipation of an updated AVG Free 8.0 (maybe during the summer). It maybe could be good to bookmark the AVG Free Forum (for AVG users).

Re: dial up connection failure (XP Home SP2)

Thanks for the info. I agree that it is an AVG problem although why they incorporated a dial-up option without testing it is beyond me. As you suggest, we'll just continue manually until AVG posts an update correcting the problem.

Re: dial up connection failure (XP Home SP2)

What I discovered was: when you start your computer as soon as AVG loads it trys to connect to the internet straight away. If you're not connected it "fails" as it cant find the connection (most likely with dial up) and so the update fails. So best to disable the auto bit and remember when everything else has finished downloading when you first connect to internet (windows up date remiders etc) to rt click AVG icon in task bar and "update now".
