    Firefox 3 Themes (Fx 3)

In another thread I was commenting to Chris Hunt that I didn't know what he meant by the "keyhole" buttons. Afterward, I did a little more reading and in yet another thread, Tony pointed out this Fx 3 reading material ( Field Guide to Firefox 3 ) which clearly says there are FOUR distinct new themes for Firefox 3 and this is where the keyhole light dawned for me when seeing a graphic of what they're supposed to look like.

Where the <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0> does one go to download these four new themes? When I installed on my machine this morning, Fx 3 continued to use what has previously been called the "default theme" and it sure ain't one of the new keyhole design models. I have been looking high and low and all I can find are what appear to be OLD themes, not the alleged four new ones. I wonder why the installer didn't put them where I could find them with the Addon tool?

Al, the reason you can't find the other new themes is that they are really just variations of the same theme. I noticed in your response to Chris (Cah) that your toolbar appears to be set to show "Icons and Text" and "Use Small Icons". If you show Icons only and uncheck "Use Small Icons", you will get the "Keyhole" effect Chris talks about.

Did you notice that while you probably have the same theme in both XP and Vista, the roof on the "Home" icon in XP is yellow, but in Vista it is blue?

Edited to add: Just read the article you refer to. It says that the four themes are really one each for Vista, XP, Mac and Linux. I guess that's why the color of the roof on the "Home" icon is different.

    Cheers,
    Regards,

You're a fast dude, Paul! I was just reading your comments to Chris, dabbling with the toolbar and figured out what you were up to. Thanks! Now I'll have to pop over to my Vista and see the other phenom you mentioned... <img src=/S/anigrin.gif border=0 alt=anigrin width=19 height=19>

    Paul,
Don't mean to sound dense (but probably I am - <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> ), but could you post a screenshot of this "keyhole" effect? Thanks.

No, you're not dense, John. Look at the graphic that bigaldoc attached to his last post above, and you can imagine that the back and forward buttons, when viewed sideways, look somewhat like an old fashioned key hole. It's a bit of a stretch, but "keyhole" does seem appropriate.

<hr>...same theme in both XP and Vista... <hr>
Yep, there she is in glorious yellow or blue, just as you said. So it's NOW obvious to me that the Fx installer is "smart" enough to install the default theme for whichever OS you're running at the time of installation.

You might also notice in my attachment a slight difference in the size of the text on the bookmark line but not the command line. I think that's a question for me to ask in Vista since both copies of Fx are running from the same profile, i.e. same font, size, DPI, etc. I've already check both XP and Vista on my machine and they're at 96 DPI, so I don't know where the ever-so-slight difference is coming from.

Re: Firefox 3 Themes (Fx 3)

I hadn't noticed that difference, Al, as I have the bookmarks toolbar turned off. But there does appear to be subtle differences everywhere. For example, the "x" to close a tab has a permanent red(dish) background in XP but it's blue in Vista, and then only if you hover over it.

One other thing you may have noticed is that the location bar no longer turns yellow when you visit an encrypted (https://...) site. If you consider this to be a problem, I came across a solution at CNET. I know you are comfortable playing around with your userChrome.css file since it looks like you highlight your active tab. Adding the following lines to this file will restore the yellow highlighting to the location bar for secure sites.

/* Set location bar to yellow for encrypted (secure) sites */

    #urlbar[level] .autocomplete-textbox-container
    { background-color: #FFFFB7 !important; }

I don't know how this will work for you since you probably share the same userChrome.css file between XP and Vista.

    Cheers,
    Regards,
    PaulB

Re: Firefox 3 Themes (Fx 3)

The default theme in Firefox 3 is based on the operating system in use, but on Vista you can easily change it to the XP theme if you want.

In Vista, right-click on the Firefox shortcut, choose Properties and then go to the Compatibility tab, you can then change the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" option to Windows XP, when you next run Firefox it will use the XP version of the theme.

Good tip, Tony, I didn't know that. I like the Vista look so will stick with that.
