Re: Data validation with fly out menu (Excel 2003 SP3)

    Hi Steve

I thank you for your quick response. I took a look at the websites and while they present interesting solutions, I won't be able to use them as they require a two cell approach.

    thanks again

Data validation with fly out menu (Excel 2003 SP3)

Edited by HansV to remove e-mail request - see <!rule=10>Rule 10<!/rule>

I want to do data validation with a drop down button in a cell. Can I have the drop down list have a fly out list of sub items from the main list? I can't figure out how to do this if it is possible.

My problem is this; I have a list of almost 1000 items (cost codes) that I want to do data validation on with a drop down selection list. I can group the list into smaller lists so that a user has smaller lists to look at and select from.

An example might be the following. If you had a list of items like OLD1 - OLD6 and NEW1 - NEW8 and you could group the list into OLD and NEW. The drop down validation would then look like OLD or NEW and if you selected OLD you could then select between OLD1 - OLD6.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you

I don't see how you would do it without a 2 cell approach: you need a selection for which list to look at and another for the selection of the item from that sublist.

Maybe I don't complete understand what you want to accomplish. Could you elaborate, perhaps based on your example?

A flyout dropdown menu is not possible (as far as I know). I think you're stuck with the two cell approach.

If it's just one cell, you can use a list or combobox control which will auto match the entry from the list as they type which helps with large lists. Or you can use code to alter the validation list itself.
