    Printer Grabs Xtra Pages

My HP PSC 1315xi all-in-one printer has suddenly started grabbing extra pages before the print job and a couple after, too. I have cleaned it, uninstalled it, reinstalled it, downloaded drivers . . . same problem. It is a great all in one and I hate to replace it - any suggestions?

Does it do the same when you print test page from Printers and Faxes > select HP PSC 1315xi > File | Properties ? Did you check all settings on Printing Preferences ?

This may seem 'far out" to you but have you looked at the paper itself?

Has it been stored in a fairly dry spot with acceptable humidity?
Is it a new batch of paper and does it "fan" out without bunching up?

    How old is this unit?

    Just some random thoughts.

Yes, it does - there are so many pages coming - it jams and errors. Eventually, the test page prints. To be honest - its maddening . . . I checked the preferences - nothing seems out of sorts. Thanks.

    Hi Bob

Yep, the paper seems okay and it works just fine in another HP. It is really putting the paper thru the machine!! Hope you have a good thought. The unit itself is slightly aged - four - four and a half years of solid service. When I copy - it does the same. Thanks.

Does the same problem present if you do a copy in stand alone mode, that is , with no connection to the computer ? If it does it sounds like a control malfunction in the printer and you may be looking at a new printer. If it does not, then you may be getting false page feed signals either from a bad cable or from problems in the computer, probably hardware.

HP has a troubleshooting guide for paper jams and paper feed problems for your series of printer combos.

    Re: Printer Grabs Xtra Pages

    Hi Paul,

Tried to copy - failed to work properly - did the same thing - lots of pages before and after the copy job. I am able to get it to scan, oddly enough, by going to Control Panel > Printers and Other Hardware > Scanners and Cameras, right click and follow the prompts. It fails to scan in the normal Image Center mode. Any ideas on how to check the hardware? Thanks - I sure appreciate the help.

    Hi Bob,

Thanks - tried scuffing up the rollers a tiny bit after cleaning them - made no difference. Ho Hum . . . this is a drag. Thanks very much for your help.

    Re: Printer Grabs Xtra Pages

Well, if your printer is misbehaving when it is unconnected from the computer, logic says the problem is not in the computer but in the printer. Just to be sure, disconnect every cable from the printer. Then connect the power cord and press the ON/resume button and then try a copy operation. If the paper feed problem still happens you have a printer failure and it is difficult to isolate and fix. The problem is that diagnosis and repair are often more costly than replacement. SO unless you find examples of similar failures of your printer model on the internet and corresponding fixes, I would have a tiny ceremony thanking your printer for fine, dedicated service and then start looking for a new one. I would not be surprised if an electrical storm may have have messed up firmware inside the printer, but it could be almost any problem that produces extra page feed signals.

From my experience, grabbing extra sheets is indicative of mechanical wear - the pinch rollers and/or tension springs wear out and there is generally little that can be done short of replacing them. As Paul stated above, repairs may well be not cost-effective... <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>

Not for nothing, but have you checked to see if there is a firmware update for your printer?
Short of that, 4+ years is a pretty good lifespan for an all-in-one. I'd say you have probably beaten the curve. But it couldn't hurt to check the firmware first, before you put down an old and trusted servant.
