Free OCR Software

From a discussion with a friend Monday (6/23/2008) night, I found myself "Tasked" with trying to find a COR Software for his scanner because h could not find his scanner software and her re-built the system some time ago.

I first tried the Lounge and found a few references but they were a couple of years ago (Alan Miller ABBY FineReader 4.0 being the main). Unfortunately, ABBY FineReader latest version appears to be 9.0 and costs money (although has free trial).

I Googled free ocr programs, free ocr scanning software, and free ocr software . As you can imagine, I received many results, many duplicactes.

One that popped out was SimpleOCR - Optical Character Recognition. Reviews i read were mixed.

Does anyone have a recommendation of a good OCR Software program ? It needs to scan some graphics, but the text will be fairly simple (no nested tables for example).

Thank in advance for any and all help !

Don't know how good it is but if you have MS Office you should find "MS Office Document Imaging" in the Office Tools folder which does OCR.

As a quick interim solution, you might want to try JOCR - only 84KB but requires Office 2003. This may be similar to what Keith was talking about.

    Re: Free OCR Software

The name of the scanner manufacturer and the model number may be the quickest route to finding suitable software, since hardware typically comes with bundled software to perform at least the basic functions of the device, and it is typically updated from time to time and available free online. We all lose disks or have them taken from us.

HERE is another link for your collection.

    Thanks for the Link ! ! ! !

I will send off an e-mail for the scanner, but I don't think it matters. The original bundled software that came with the scanner was TextBridge STANDARD. The latest versions are TextBridge Pro from Nuance.Com TextBridge Pro 11.

I have found no site that offers the TextBridge software anymore, only Downloads for current Pro versions.

    I appreciate the response !
