Different login name is displayed (XP Pro SP3)

(I inherited my work laptop from a previous employee, who left under "less-than-ideal" circumstances. I have had issues with USB ports not working and wireless issues as well, so I don't get surprised too much at any new problem.)

When I start up, I get the Ctrl-Alt-Del login, but since I am the only user, it displays my username right away, waiting for the pw. Or, I should say, what SHOULD BE my username. It says "User", but my actual login is different (djmoore).
I've changed this in the past for others - a hand-me-down PC with a previous user's name displayed at the top of the Start menu. I search the registry for that old user's name and change it to the new user's name. Only in this case I can't just do that, because I would imagine that "User" occurs in more places than just where the login name would be.
So, just how can I change 'User' to read 'djmoore'? It's basically cosmetic, but i DO have to change User to djmoore every time I log in. I would much rather have it remain djmoore all the time.

And as a side question, just how DO you get the username to display at the top of the Start menu?

You can set the default username using Regedit to modify the registry key

Thanks, Stuart - I could just see me going in and changing all occurrences of "user", and my legacy being that I completely hosed the laptop.

Any suggestions on how to get the user name (or computer name, I suppose) to display at the top of the Start menu? I'm sure I will eventually get that request.

Did you make this account or did you rename another to this "djmoore" account name?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

I think I did it with TweakUI which you can find here, along with all the other Power Toys: Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP

Re: Different login name is displayed (XP Pro SP3)

Dave: I renamed the existing one 'djmoore' - presumably it was 'User' before this. I made the change in the registry suggested by Stuart; tomorrow when I log in I'll see what's what.

BigAl: TweakUI I love, but that doesn't explain how it got on so many of the computers I support - without an exception (so far), all I have to do to remember the name of the person whose PC I am working on is to hit the Windows button. Because I'm really bad with names, this comes in very handy.
But I cannot imagine, with the level of PC competency that I encounter every day, that the users even know about TweakUI, let alone are capable of finding and downloading it. They ARE all Dell, though, so probably Dell has customized it to reflect the Computer Name at the top of the Start menu.

But as for me, TweakUI is the place to be - i need to install it on my laptop ASAP. Thanks, BigAl!

I think that the default user account from Dell is "User", some other OEM's will use "Owner".

I have found that one will have nothing but issues when they rename an account. You will find that you can not rename the folder that is in "Documents and Settings" folder, it will always be the original name.

"You will find that you can not rename the folder that is in "Documents and Settings" folder, it will always be the original name."

And the cause for that has been <!post=mentioned before in the Lounge,558165>mentioned before in the Lounge<!/post>.

There is a difference between the "actual account name"/user name and the "Full name". When an account is created (if not done in some odd way) both are the same: "actual account name" = "Full name". For the majority of the users both names stay the same.

The "Full name" is the one shown on the Start menu, the Welcome screen and in User Accounts screen (Control panel) etc.

The "actual account name" is used internally by Windows; one uses it rarely, if one has to specify the account in commands etc. And in most cases both names are the same, so ...

The "actual account name" is also the one used for the User Profile sub folder in Documents and Settings. And, obviously, since the User Accounts tool (CP) only will change the "Full name" nothing will happen with the "actual account name" with THAT tool. And even if one see the need to change the "actual account name" with another tool, the name of the folder will not change. So I agree with you Dave on this.

But a slightly different folder name is no problem. If you have one "John Smith", and initially named everything "John", and you then get another John, one "John Doe", there perhaps would be a great idea to add their surnames to the Welcome screen [by changing the "full name" with the CP]. Depending on how one does the setup each one may only see their own files and folders, and certainly no problem with saving in the wrong place. And the Admin can always track the correct "actual account name" to the "full name".

This is intended to change something simple as adding a surname, change to a nickname on the Welcome screen etc. and has no impact on running the PC. On the other hand; renaming some old account for a new user, well, the best way is to start fresh with a new account.

Linking a loged on to account (using the "Full name") with an "actual account name" can be done in some different ways (if it somehow is hard to figure out) either the Users tab in the Task Manager, or exploring the Start button (right-click and select Explore).
