    Not a JPG file?

I was sent a JPG file of a flyer for an event, and tried to open it with GIMP, my preferred editor. I got the message below, that it was not a JPEG file, and GIMP wouldn't open it. Neither would MS Ofice Picture editor. But both IrfanView and Serif PhotoPlus will open it.

Any idea what is going on?

Some applications create .JPG files with a non-standard header. I have encountered them too.

Applications such as GIMP, Paint and MS Office Picture Editor are very strict: they refuse to open files with a non-standard header. Others, such as IrfanView, are more forgiving.

If you use Save As from IrfanView without changing the picture in any way, it will save it with a standard header, so other applications should be able the picture again.
