    DVD Problem (XP SP2)

I have two almost identical PCs networked and running Windows XP SP2. They both have an ASUS DRW-1608P3S DVD drive. Recently on one only of the PCs the DVD drive has lost sound when playing a DVD. Video is OK and playing a CD the sound works fine. Also playing other sound files from the PC the sound is OK. DVDs play both video and sound perfecly on the other PC. Can someone suggest where I start looking to resolve this problem?

    Hi Phil

Are both the PC's using the same Codecs and is it occurring on all DVD's you play on it?

<P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by IMNetUser on 30-Jun-08 07:26. As usual, correct spelling and add question on Region Code.)</P>Question - Can you rip the DVD to hard drive and play movie back to see if you get video and sound ?

If so, the problem would indicate DVD Player or CODEC for DVD Player when using DVD Movies for sound ? Will have to check this some more.

    EDITED TO ADD:
For G&G's (Grins and Giggles), have you verified the Region code has not changed ?

Also, are you using the same DVD Player on both machines ?

As stated in my original post "They both have an ASUS DRW-1608P3S DVD drive". Where do I check these Codecs and Region code?

What program are you using to play the DVDs? Has it been updated recently?

Have checked those links but no help there. Still no sound from one DVD player yet the other one works fine. Have also recently run Windows Update on both machines so thay should both be up to date.

    Re: DVD Problem (XP SP2)

    1) Have you checked all the connections on the DVD drives
    2) Have you thought of swapping the Drives over? Although a bit of work it will determine whether the drive is broken or it is a software issue
    3) As you have just service packed the PC's you may find that you will have to update the Codecs. (Have you done this?)
    4) You have not mentioned if the PC's have the same set up of peripherals and/or drives, there may be a conflict in the hardware. Have a look at the Device Manager are there any conflicts obvious in the lists.

1 & 2, I have not opened the PC case. 3, How do I update the Codecs? 4, The two PCs are virtually identical. I cannot see any conflicts in Device Manager. Maybe I will just play my DVDs on the other PC.

Did you check out and instal Free-Codecs.com :: Download AC3 Filter 1.50a : AC3 Filter is a DirectShow filter for AC3 decoding mentioned in several threads?

    Re: DVD Problem (XP SP2)

I do not really want to install new codecs or anything else for that matter. Both PCs played DVDs without problems until a few days ago. One is still working perfectly. If it doesnt need tampering with I do not see why the problem has occurred on the other one. Perhaps a setting has been changed inadvertently and unwittingly. But I do not know where to look.

    Re: DVD Problem (XP SP2)

Sorry for the delay in responding - end of month activities at work. To check the Region code, you need to open Device Manager (one way, right mouse click over "Computer Manager, Click on "Manage" on popup; On "Computer Management" Window, Click "Device Manager"; With Device Manager selected, Expand the Line "DVD/CD-Rom drives", Right Mouse click over device in question and goto "Properties").

With Properties displayed fro DVD Drive, click on "DVD Region" as shown below. Most drives allow several changes, but be careful when changing regions for the last time - the change is permanent. The region code is based on the region the DVD was created and/or created for. Usually once set, you never have to change it.

Have you been able to rip a DVD to the hard drive and play in Windows Media player ? This can will determine whether the problem is hardware (DVD Player) or application (Windows Media Player).

The Codecs are going to be for the software application you use to play the move - I see others have already replied in this area.

A final thought, have you considered downloading and playing the move in a different free dvd player to see if that works ?

I understand that you don't want to install or change anything. BUT (and with computers there is always a BUT <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>) a current codec could have been corrupted. You could have a hardware problem. Some combination of updates, program execution, etc.,etc. could have caused the problem. Debugging can be a time consuming and frustrating pain in the rear. I doubt that you are going to find a magic bullet without doing some digging and making some changes.
