select speed - how to slow down

how on earth do you slow down the vertical scroll speed so that you can select past the viewable area, but not have it automatically scroll 15 pages past where you were when you started the scroll? I've tried changing the zoom so that I can see more on the screen... but when using the mouse to select, the only way i can describe it is as a "runaway scroll". any ideas would be greatly apprecaited!

    A couple suggestions...

In Word if you press F8, or double-click the EXT on the status bar at bottom of screen, you get an extended selection tool. With it, you have many options:

    Laura,

I'd use the keybpard rather than the mouse. Select your start position, hit F8, and use your pageUp/PageDown/Arrow keys (or even Find/Goto) to scroll.

I click where I want to start the selection, use the scroll bar until I can see the end point and then Shift-Click
