HTTPAPI.DLL Error (XP MCE)

Reference: <post:=718,757>post 718,757</post:> in the Software forum.

In that post I described a problem that I had after installing three software updates to apps on my XP drive. I "thought" by un-installation arithmetic that the problem might have been caused by the latest version of Revo Uninstaller, but now I'm not sure and don't know if I will ever find out after the fact. I didn't quite tell the truth in that thread because I said that my XP was fully patched and that excluded SP3 at that time. It turns out that updating my system with SP3 seems to have fixed the problem, so that's why I don't know if I will ever know the answer, although I do intend to re-install the latest Revo Uninstaller, so we shall see.

For the benefit of future readers, my XP, after long 5-10 minute boot delays, was giving me a dreaded "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services" has failed error message. In sending the report and looking at the detail, HTTPAPI.DLL was the file "accused" of causing the error. I was directed to this Microsoft site: Microsoft Windows Error Reporting which further directed me to a MS fix alleged to correct the problem. The fix did NOT correct the problem and after MANY reboots to verify that fact, I gave up and gave in - installing SP3 which (in truth) I was NEVER planning to install.

For the rest of today, I have booted this sucker several times and am not having any more problems with either HTTPAPI.DLL or SVCHOST.EXE so who knows. And, I don't even know what the HTTPAPI.DLL does!

With a name like that, I would guess that it is an Application Programming Interface (API) for HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) .

    From HTTP Server API (Windows):

"The HTTP Server API enables applications to communicate over HTTP without using Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS). Applications can register to receive HTTP requests for particular URLs, receive HTTP requests, and send HTTP responses. The HTTP Server API includes SSL support so that applications can exchange data over secure HTTP connections without IIS. It is also designed to work with I/O completion ports."

Which leads one to: Using HTTP Server API (Windows) and:

"Application program source files include the Http.h header file to access function prototypes and structure definitions for the HTTP Server API. Developers can use the Httpapi.lib library file to build applications that use the HTTP Server API. At runtime, applications link to the Httpapi.dll."

Whoooeee, good job Stuart! A bunch of Googling didn't yield that much.

Seriously though, most of the Google results I got were from sites wanting to "scan" my computer for miscreants and I always avoid those kind of places that really want to sell me something. I can discern that it's a "helper" app in some way but what I DON'T know is what program on my computer was trying to use it. THAT'S the mystery.

    Al,

You can find more information about this API on the Microsoft web site, here and here for example.

Not that this tells you which application on your computer uses it

Thanks. I've been to those two locations and didn't learn anything.

    Al,

    > I've been to those two locations and didn't learn anything.

This DLL is used by programmers who want to access web pages from inside an application. This could be to check for updates, to do some kind of license validation, to fetch updated help files or any other reason the programmer might want to get stuff from the web.

    Re: HTTPAPI.DLL Error (XP MCE)

I didn't say that properly, Stuart. No offense meant. Like many of us, I have a number of programs which "call home" with my blessing and that of ZA, including ZA itself. I think under normal circumstances there are about 10 or 11 instances of scvhost.exe running and I'd wager that some (or all?) of those are because of the above mentioned apps. The problem for me was that after the Generic Host error, checking the detail to see the backup info about httpapi, when the machine completed booting, there was one or two LESS copies of svchost.exe running. The bottom line is that I don't know which of MY programs caused the problem to happen. I could only guess that it was one of the three updates I had just installed.

Anyway, since SP3 seems to have "repaired" the problem, I guess I should move on, huh?

    Re: HTTPAPI.DLL Error (XP MCE)

In the middle of all of this episode, I was trying my best to use SIW or AUTORUNS to "detective" what calls the svchost.exe which in turn seems to have been linked to that dll. I gave up.

Hey, thanks for the links Joe.

You might want to try Process Explorer to find what calls what. It is one of the Sysinternals utilities.

Thanks, Joe. I just KNEW there was another one of those SysInternals things I needed to look at but the list is so long, I couldn't remember. I think I'm gonna change the names of the ones I use to UPPER case so I'll remember in the future. I might try this afternoon to take a look.

Good luck. That computer stuff can be cryptic at times.
