    Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

Yes, you can, but I'd do it only if you have a pressing reason for it. See How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 3 from your computer.

Thanks, Hans, No real reason just saw that the advise is now to NOT install it. Little while ago I saw ok to install on Ask Woody.
    Thanks again,

I'm less pessimistic about SP3 than Woody - I've installed it on a series of PCs without any problems.

I've also installed it on quite a few PCs with no bad results. I concur with Hans that I'm less pessimistic about Sp-3 than Woody. If you've been running for several days with it and have not had problems all the more reason to leave it alone.

With all due respect to the man for whom we all volunteer here, but just because Woody had trouble with a laptop (no kidding, a laptop huh?) is no reason to avoid SP3, or ESPECIALLY in your case, to remove it. I just joined the SP3 club yesterday but it FIXED a problem I was having and hasn't caused any. Like the others have said, if yours ain't broke, don't try to "fix" it.

Re: Service Pack 3 (Service Pack 3)

Also with all due respect, it would have been helpful if our 'patron' had indicated the problems he experienced in installing XP3 on his laptop.

I have now installed the update on three computers (2 notebooks and 1 - oldish - desk top). On the desktop and the newer notebook, no problems at all. On the, also oldish, notebook, the CPU or hard drive usage during the update caused it to overheat a little, giving keyboard problems. I assumed the problem was with XP3, so uninstalled XP3 - with no problems - but found the keyboard problem still existed, so diagnosed it as a heat problem. Reinstalled XP3 on a cooler evening, again no problems and all continues to be well.

Is there any likelihood MS will reissue XP3 because of these isolated problems? I wonder how long Woody will (ask us to) wait?

Re: Service Pack 3 (Service Pack 3)

I installed XP3 and then used a disc image to go back to SP2. I found I couldn't add/remove windows components with SP3 installed. This is almost certainly because I used nlite when originally setting up XP. But then even without that problem I found the required tweaking after installing it more hassle than any noticeable gain.

Re: Service Pack 3 (Service Pack 3)

Microsoft is unlikely to re-issue SP-3. That would cause no end of headaches for those who have already installed. Public & private organizations take some time to test before deployment. A re-issue would cause the test cycle to re-start. Microsoft will address issue with patches issued for SP-3.

Sorry to be a pest, Chris, but can you give us an example or two of the kind of required tweaking you're describing? I have never heard of NLITE so I don't know what impact it has, but I'd like to see if one or more of your tweaking glitches is on my system now that I've had SP3 installed for a couple of days without any noticed problems.

Re: Service Pack 3 (Service Pack 3)

    Al,
    Check out http://www.nliteos.com/.
I think this is what Chris is using.

    From the main page
    <hr>nLite 1.4.5 Final
    2008.05.08
Finally the XP SP3 was released so here is the final nLite version update as well.

Just one important thing changed, SP3 Slipstream under Vista. It would reject your valid CD-Key. Not my doing but it is fixed anyway.
So in order to fix the XP SP3 CD-Key issues remake the Slipstreamed version from scratch with this nLite version.
Update: if you are upgrading from RTM to SP3 then first slipstream SP2 if you are using Vista as a host.
