    pulling excel info to a new doc (2003)

    Hi I wonder if anyone can advise me.
    I have a doc called 1.xls into which I need to add information from another excel doc 2.xls. There is a unique ID field common to both 1.xls and 2.xls. I need specific date data from 2.xls to copy into 1.xls where the unique identifier is found in 1.xls..... All the unique identifiers in 1.xls will not be found in 2.xls but all in 2.xls will be in 1.xls... Does that make sense? I'm not sure that VLookup is the correct way to go here................Thanks very much in advance...

    Let's say that the unique identifiers are in column A and the dates that you want to look up are in column D, starting in row 2.
    In cell B2 (for example) on the relevant sheet in 1.xls, enter the following formula:
    <code>
    =VLOOKUP(A2, '[2.xls]Sheet1'!A21000, 4, FALSE)
    </code>
    Replace Sheet1 with the name of the sheet containing the data. The third argument, 4, tells Excel to look in the 4th column, i.e. column D. The fourth argument, FALSE, tells Excel that you don't want an approximate match but an exact one.
