    Reliable Patches

Not sure if this is the correct forum, but could a Lounger direct me to where I can find Woody's list of reliable patches for Vista. I have a new laptop and have now turned off Auto Update (a few updates sneaked in before I had done so), but am notified that there are 15 waiting to be downloaded. Before doing so, I would like to know which ones I should or should not download - and if I should get rid of any of the ones which downloaded automatically.

    Many thanks.

    Re: Reliable Patches

Is SP-1 already installed (right click Computer and select Properties to check)? If it is, I'd just go ahead and update the system. If SP-1 is not installed, I recommend a full backup but backup your data at a minimum. Then install SP-1. After SP-1 is installed then install any subsequent updates. I've updated several desktop and notebook systems without any incidents.

    Re: Reliable Patches

Thanks, Doc and Joe (Doc, you're everywhere helping out - you can see I've set aside this afternoon to try and clean up a number of technical issues!). Appreciate the link and will check it out now.

    Answer and Question for Joe:
It is SP1. Does that mean I should install all of the recommended updates or should I check out Doc Watson's site for recommended and not recommended items first?

I'd just go ahead and install them. If you'd feel better do a backup first.

    That's not my site. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> Woody runs this show. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

But seriously, like Joe said, just go ahead and get them all. Woody's latest post states....
"Patch everything except Windows XP SP3 and the Vista "reliability and performance update"

It's time to get your patching caught up. Windows XP SP3 remains a problem, and I wouldn't install the KB 952709 Vista SP1 "reliability and performance update," but everything else - including Vista SP1 - looks fine."

    Re: Reliable Patches

    Hi Doc,
What was the reason NOT to install the KB952709?
    I have had it installed and SP3 without any problem with. ( that I know of ) <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

    Hey Mr. Uranium !!! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Don't really know Bob. All Woody says is, "I haven't seen enough results on that patch to make me feel the least bit warm or fuzzy."

Woody seems to be a bit more cautious with his patch advice than most of the rest of us are with installing them. I generally wait at least 2 weeks before installing any new patches or updates. Once bitten, twice shy, I suppose.

    Re: Reliable Patches

    Hi Doc,

Thanks for your last note about "go ahead and patch". Don't worry, I know it's Woody's show, but you are definitely a major cog in the wheel! I'm off to install all the patches, except the ones Woody says not to.

    Again, many thanks!

    Linda
