Slow Lounge

Yesterday and just recently, I've experienced a slowdown when loading Lounge pages. This seems similar to what happened prior to moving from the old server.

    Is it just me?

BTW, a big THANK YOU to everyone involved in making the Lounge a better place (I see I'm late to join in the correct thread since it's now locked).

    Re: Slow Lounge

Our new server is slow for a period of time starting at 23:00 UTC (6 PM in Argentina). This is because the daily backups are made then. I'm not sure exactly how long it lasts (it's in the middle of the night for me) but it shouldn't take more than 2 hours. The rest of the day, the server is very fast.

Thanks for that little tidbit, Hans. It explains (relative) slowdowns that I've noticed while enjoying inaugural caffeine infusion for the day (brekkie). Not an unreasonable time for the Lounge to rebuild to full speed, while I'm doing much the same

    Re: Slow Lounge

I think the thing that THRILLS me, in addition to the concern about nightly slowdown, is that the server is being BACKED UP, period! Amen to that!

Now, if there has to be a time of day when the performance of the service suffers, it seems to me it's very difficult to choose a time that doesn't impact someone, somewhere. Given the international makeup of our members, it seems like this (approx.) 7 PM Eastern (USA) might not be such a bad time. I was thinking along the lines of 11 or 12 at night, but that would be in the shank of the evening for all our USA west coast users. So, it's tough to choose a recommended time other than where the company is now.

    Thank you, Hans.

If this behaviour is due to daily backups, then it can be expected to persist, right? I couldn't connect earlier today and now (1:13 am Argentina time) it's working alright.

    Re: Slow Lounge

Yes, it'll be a daily phenomenon.

I've checked it today - the slowness starts at about 23:00 UTC (8 PM your time) and ends about 1:00 UTC (10 PM your time). It's intermittent - there will be periods within this time frame where you can work almost normally, but there will also be periods in which loading a page takes more than 5 minutes.

    Re: Slow Lounge

Exactly what I experienced this morning. I almost revised my previous <post#=719770>post 719770</post#> because everything was going along swimmingly. But, then as I was about to race out the door to work, I was hit by one of those 5min+ loads.

A bit of a nuisance, but a tiny price to pay for for the performance we have at other times, as well as the security of backups.

    Re: Slow Lounge

Last evening I was cursing; but with your explanation I am now quite mollified. During non backup times it certainly flies. I suspect that to suit my scheduling needs best , I should move to Athens.

I wonder what the wife would say.
