    Headers (2003)

    Hello,

I have "Chapter X" as the numbering scheme for my header 1. When I put a soft return after the "X" and before the actual chapter name, the soft return gets reflected in the headers, where the chapter number is set up as a field. Is there a way to get the soft return in the chapter name in heading 1 without its being in the header?

    Regards,

    JMT

    Hi JMT,

Whilst 'No' might be technically correct, you can suppress the line-feed character's display in the STYLEREF field by formatting it as hidden text in the header. In order to preserve the heading's layout for print previewing and at print time, you'll also need to check the 'hidden text' box under Tools|options|Print.

    Dear Paul,

Will that cause the soft return to disapear only when I print or also when I view it on my screen in print layout view without hidden text being shown?

Will checking "hidden text" under Tools/Options/Print cause Word to print my field codes, index entries and table of authorities entries that are hidden in the text?

    Regards,

    Hi JMT,

In Print Layout View, making the soft return hidden only affects the Header appearance - not the heading's - and that's regardless of whether the 'hidden text' View option is 'on' or 'off'.

You need to adjust the 'hidden text' Print option so that the Heading output is correct for both 'Print Preview' and printing.
