    Line Spacing Question (Word 2003)

I have a paper that is set to double-space. This goes along fine until I hit a hard-return, at which point it seems to do 2 or 3 spaces, like the image at the bottom.

Is this correct? Can it be "fixed" so that a hard-return would only go to the next (double-spaced) line?

Re: Line Spacing Question (Word 2003)

It could be that the style of the first paragraph is set to produce a different style for the second one. For instance it is possible to set a style called say "Opening" and specify that the style of the following paragraph is say "Body Text". If "Body Text" has different line spacing from "Opening", this would produce the effect you have seen. What is the style of the first para and of the second one? If you look at the details of the first style, does it specify a different style for the next paragraph?

Can you let us know the settings for Space Before and Space After for each paragraph style.
Can you do another similar screen shot with Tools > Options > View > All selected, so we can see exactly what line breaks you have used.

    Stuart/Ian:

I just went back and cleared all the formatting from the suspect lines, and it fixed it.

You guys were right, although I don't have the foggiest how/why. There had to have been something in the formatting that was dictating the change.

Have to keep an eye out to see if I can catch the "when" and maybe that will help lead to the how/why.

Stuart, I shot the Tools/Options/View jut FYI, but there doesn't appear to be anything out of place...

Re: Line Spacing Question (Word 2003)

I'd suspect that the cause was either what I said, or, what I assume to be the idea behind Stuart's questions, that it was to do with spacing before or after paragraphs.

(It would be possible to have the second paragraph set at double spacing like the first was, but still to see a bigger space between the paragraphs if either the first para were set to extra space after, or the second para were set to extra space before, or both.)

    Ian:

I hear that Word 07 has a "view all codes option... that by itself could be reason enough to switch.

    Thanks,

Please explain what you mean by "view all codes option" as I find nothing about it?

Re: Line Spacing Question (Word 2003)

    Dave:

There's been in WordPerfect, since way back to WP for Dos days, a command to show all codes for things such as bold, underline, italics, hard ereturn, etc.(I think in WP it was, way back then, Alt-F7, or maybe F6).

I read just recently that Word 2007 did, or was going to have it -- I recall they even remarking that WP users wouldn't be impressed, since they'd always had it.

Since I use (as yet) 2003, there's no way for me to see or try it.

I DO know that it would have been a help to see why my line spacing seemed to "change all by itself".

    Regards,
    Chuck.

Re: Line Spacing Question (Word 2003)

In Word Perfect it is "Reveal Codes" and NO they are NOT is Office 2007 as far as I know.

Even a Google does not even lists anything that may be what you are saying that you read.
