Circular Logo Cropping

I have MS Office 2007 Picture Manager and Paint on my computer. Neither seems to have an easy solution. I have a whole bunch of logos--all circular patches on a square white background and two irregular shape on a square white background--that I want to remove the background from.

What application or how might I cut out the circle and so that I have no background or at least change the background from white to transparent?

Thanks

If these were converted to a "gif" file then the background could be made "Transparent" using a gif editing program.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

As Dave mentions you will have to convert the graphic to a GIF file ( it is currently a jpeg file)

There are a number of tool son the market which use a tool called Magic Wand or Selection Tool which highlights areas of similar colour to allow you to delete it. Try searching Googlr for an application called GIMP. It is freeware and quite easy to use

Thank you. I have downloaded the GIMP application and found the magic wand. How does one convert the jpegs to gifs?

When I select the magic wand then select a contiguous background, I then right-click Edit-->Clear. Nothing seems to have happened.

Re: Circular Logo Cropping

Hi there

1) Right click the image and go to Layers then Add alpha channel.

2) Right click on the image click Select and then down to By colour. A window that is all black opens up.

3) Click on the white part in your image it will show up outlined.

4) Right click on the image, goto Edit and then down to Clear. This should delete the white part of your image.

5) Right click on the image and choose Save as and make sure to save as a GIF file if you want the transparency to work on the web.

Re: Circular Logo Cropping

Jerry,
That worked for a few of my logos. However, it is Layer->Transparency->Add alpha channel it seems.

I have attached a logo that seems more complex. That is, the white corners aren't just white. They seem to have grey dots in them as well which makes the alpha channel function mess up the entire logo. I will attach two difficult ones to enlist help on the steps I would take to clean them up.

Thanks

Re: Circular Logo Cropping

Here is the second more complex one. I would like to just segragate the logo and get rid of the JOIN AFOSI.

I need help with the steps on how to do that as well since I have others like it.

OK, here is the Department of Energy. The problem here is that it is from an old bitmap which has a mix of colours as a background , I just cropped it and got around the problem

Jerry,
Thanks for the help. Enlarging things to 200%+ and using the Eraser Tool works well to do the last bit of clean up. It is tedious though.

I have attached two more that I could use your help on if you have any ideas.

Yikes, Jezza - you call that easy to use??? I would think easy to use means intuitive ... not 'alpha channel'.

Seriously, I have read that while GIMP is powerful, it is only easy to use if you are very proficient in more sophisticated apps like PhotoShop. Are there any other free apps besides GIMP that would do this? [that are actually easy to use]]
