    Variable in AutoText (Word2003)

I work for the Tennessee Legislature; many of our users have elaborate Autotext entries using fillin fields to construct text for reports. some entries require the identical text multiple times. I would like to set up hidden variables to capture the text once and then insert it in the appropriate places, using fillin fields for just those requiring a unique text entry. MS Office Help has an item: "Fields codes: Set field" {SET bookmark "Text"} which appears to be my answer but I can't get it to work in an Autotext entry. Any help appreciated.

Try using an ASK field instead of a FILLIN field - see Field codes: Ask field.

    Re: Variable in AutoText (Word2003)

    Hans,
The "ASK" field did allow me to retain the text input but now I find another problem. This text is to be placed in both a visible and hidden context. I find that the "REF" field resulting from the "ASK" field is always visible even when inserted into a string of hidden text. Is there a way to make it hidden in this context. The "REF" field shows the hidden underline when in display fields. Thanks for your help.

Whether hidden text is displayed in a document is controlled by the "Hidden text" check box in the View tab of Tools | Options...
Whether hidden text is visible in printed output is controlled by the "Hidden text" check box in the Print tab of Tools | Options...
They can be set independently of each other, and both are user-level settings.

    Hi Hans,
An example is worth a 1,000 words, or some such!
In the attached example the first "REF" Origbill is correctly visible, the 2nd should be hidden. The first "REF" Newbill should be hidden and the 2nd visible. The entire entry is captured as Autotext and played back with the user inserting the required text in each "ASK" field.

    Re: Variable in AutoText (Word2003)

I believe I solved it. I selected the field I wanted to be hidden and used Format|Font checked Hidden.
    Thanks for all the suggestions.
