    Hard Space in Word (2003)

The software for a Fujitsu scanner has taken over the shortcut (Shift + Ctrl + space) to insert a hard space in MS Word. Is there another way to accomplish this? I have never come across this before. any help will be greatly appreciated!

One possibility is that an add-in has changed the keyboard shortcut in Word. Another is that a system level hotkey has been created that is overriding Word's default. In that case, you probably would need to disable/uninstall the add-in or system-level hotkey in order to regain use of Ctrl+Shift+space.

Alternately, you could assign a new keyboard shortcut for a hard (non-breaking) space. If you open Tools > Customize, Keyboard, and choose "Common Symbols" from the list on the left, you will be able to choose Nonbreaking space on the right and assign a new or additional key combination. By default, Ctrl+Alt+space is available.

    Hi Carol,

Without having to disable the add-in, you could hold down the Alt key and type 160 on the numeric keypad on a std keyboard (I don't know how one gets ALt-Num combinations on laptops that lack a numeric keypad).

When I hold down the ALT key and type 160 on the num pad I get an accented a.

    Type Alt+0160 instead.

You're the best Hans! I don't know why I didn't think of that!
