spyware blaster 4.1

This morning I tried to update to the new Spyware Blaster 4.1 and have not been able to. I am trying to use the free version, but am beginning to believe that is impossible.

When I follow all of the instructions ie, uninstall old (4.0) version using the remove software option in winxp, download 4.1 version and execute the package,
everything goes wrong. Using firefox3 - executing the install package terminates firefox 3.0. I next tried using IE - it also is terminated.

I have tried 2 different download sites and get the same result with both. In my download folder, I can see that there are (at this time 3) versions of the SB install package. Each one of the install packages is marked by windows xp as "not a valid win32 application"

I attempted to contact Javacool, but since I didn't pay the license fee, I am redirected to their support forum. The support forum won't let me submit a problem entry in the forum. Probably also because I didn't pay the license fee.

I am convinced this is not a problem of my making, but I cannot seem to contact Javacool.

In light of the above - the question now has become "Is Spyware Blaster really worth all of these problems?"

I currently am running ZoneAlarm, AVG, and PCtools Spyware Doctor. Is Spyware Blaster really needed in addition to these 3 packages?

If I do need another package, is there another package that anyone can recommend?

Your issues with SpywareBlaster might be more a matter of how you are attempting to download & install it. Rather than insisting that it install from the internet through your browser, have you attempted to DL the install file to your desktop and executing the install process from there ??? If not, I would suggest trying that before you give up a very unintrusive and useful utility.

The tools one uses for protection are strictly a matter of personal preference. That said, you might want to take a look at this post and consider adding Adaware and Spybot Search & Destroy to your system. Both are excellent and . The one common feeling here in the Lounge about these protection utilities is that one is never enough. I use Webroot's Spy Sweeper instead of Spy Doctor because I feel it offers better protection for the money and Avast AV rather than AVG because I prefer the interface. But I also have SpywareBlaster, Adaware, Spybot S&D, ZoneAlarm and Systernal's Root Kit Revealer installed and update and run each once a week. HTH {smile]

I can only say that I downlaoded and installed v4.1 three days ago and had no trouble. I downloaded from MajorGeeks to my desktop, closed the browser window and installed the downloaded application without a hitch on an XP SP2 fully patched system (no IE7).

I would suggest that you DL again, this time to your desktop, and try again.

Joining in here with Doc...

I would imagine that whatever you already have on your hard drive is corrupt in some way and I would delete those files. Try downloading again and this time DON'T choose Run but rather Save, and pick a folder on your drive to save the file into.

I downloaded version 4.1 on June 12 and the EXE file is 2,869,536 bytes as it sits on my drive. I agree with Doc - you ought not to give up a valuable utility because of this one "glitch."

I uninstalled everything (old swb4.0) and reaccessed web site - this time I "Paid" for support and lo and behold - everything worked,

Thanks - if you hadn't urged me I would have given up on it. This time the download checks out as a valid windows 32 file.

I still don't trust the "Free" file

Like the others I suspect that your problem with the free download was either a glitch or the result of some other problem. I downloaded and installed version 4.1 on June 12 without any problem.

Great, Tom, glad to hear that you got there. Well, if by "paid" you mean that you paid the $10 bucks for automatic updates, I think it's worth it in this case. It's a good program and I'm convinced it helps to keep the bad guys out and giving him $10 bucks for his efforts is OK with me.

Re: spyware blaster 4.1

I'd like to add a little something here for the benefit of readers. I think I have my facts right, but if not I'm sure someone will let me know. As far as I know, there is ONLY a version of SpywareBlaster. Wilders does not charge for support using their forum. The author of the program has a network version in what he calls "controlled" distribution, so it cannot be downloaded from the website. There is ONLY one download and it is free! Now, you can make a Pay Pal donation if you like but that gets you nothing but his gratitude.

AFTER downloading and installing the program, you can sign up for Auto Updates for a FEE, but you must do that from within the running program I believe.

I hope I've said all that correctly.
