    Slows again?

Are we back to the "slows" again?

I know about the backup time frame and all but this has been since the last hour or more ( 15:00 to 16:00 EDT ) pages slow to a crawl and won't refresh, etc.
Just seems to be in the Lounge. Other sites load and refresh fine.
    Last night, after 20:00 was still turtle-like, then came back to normal speed. Now it's back to "go get a cup of coffee" time. <img src=/S/snail.gif border=0 alt=snail width=21 height=17> <img src=/S/question.gif border=0 alt=question width=15 height=15>

I'm experiencing the same problem, 20.00 - 21.00 UK time. I had the same problem a few days back using IE7, switched to AOL's browser and all was fine. That was probably an unrelated fault though, as slow on both browsers tonight.

My suspicion is that the timeframe for the backup has been changed without notice. I'll try to find out.

I haven't had a confirmation yet, but I don't notice any slowdown at all at the moment, so I guess the backup was made earlier than usual.

    Re: Slows again?

The daily backup was indeed started 4 hours earlier than on previous days.
The owner of the server has now changed it back to start at 23:00 UTC (7 PM EDT).
So you'll have to expect the Lounge being slow between 23:00 UTC and 01:00 UTC (7 PM to 9 PM EDT)
This is not ideal for us, because it's late in the afternoon/early in the evening in the USA (depending on the time zone), but later than that is impossible because it would interfere with business hours in Thailand where the server is located.
Although it's inconvenient, I think it's a small price to pay for having a very fast Lounge during the other 22 hours, and having the reassurance that there are daily backups.

Until the big crash of August 2007, the server was indeed in New Jersey. From September 2007 to two weeks ago, it was hosted by Maddogdomains somewhere else in the USA (I don't know where). Two weeks ago we moved to a new server in Thailand, the same one that also hosts AskWoody and KhunWoody. Woody, as you may know, is living on Phuket island in Thailand nowadays.

    Thanks for the update, Hans.
Didn't know the server is in Thailand. Thought it was in New Jersey.

OK. I did know Woodie lived in Phuket but didn't realize he moved the server to his home town with the latest move. Thank you, sir.

    Re: Slows again?

The backup software used by our new provider intermittently uses most of the processor capacity and it takes about two hours. Unfortunately, we can't do anything about that.
Franly, we hadn't anticipated this when we moved, but we felt the move was urgent because performance on the old server was becoming worse by the week, and the number of visitors to Woody's Lounge was dropping.

We have Loungers all over the world, in many time zones, and some Loungers are most active during working hours, others in the evening, so the backup is always going to inconvenience someone. We would have preferred the backup to be made during the time that the Lounge is least active, when it's late evening/early night in the USA, but that would be during office hours in Thailand. The owner of the server would prefer to do it in the middle of the night in Thailand, but that is during office hours in the USA. The current time is the best we could get - around dawn in Thailand, early night in Europe and evening in the USA.

    Sooooo ...
Now the exercise in Moving Servers has proved successful, why don't we all just move to Thailand? Consistent backup times, free coffee from Woody (I seem to recall his offer of about 10 years ago), HAS to be a better climate than Toronto, to name but one place, ...

I suppose this is true if one thinks and acts globally. I suspect, however, that some of us think locally, perhaps more than we should. Because of life constraints like sleeping, eating, working and adding in some personal preference, we don't in a practical sense have access to the Lounge 24 hours a day. It may be more like a time window of three hours a day and if that time window and the backup time overlap it is a significant hit. In my case, prime time to read the Lounge is weekdays after work, after dinner and before bedtime. Here on the US east coast, and for me, that is about 7pm to 10 pm. So I feel like the dice were rolled and I lost. Some unwelcome adjustments in my schedule appear to be in my future. Weekends are a lot more flexible so then it is not as big an issue.

Maybe not as much you may think, and certainly not a whole three hour window. My experience of performance during the backup window is that it's fine for the bulk of it, with a few bad hits a la the "old Lounge". This matches <!post=Hans' previous advice,719813>Hans' previous advice<!/post>.

ie You may get a few extra opportunities to top up on caffeine, but should be mostly OK.

Thanks, Hans. I'd overlooked that possibility.
    Still, all is relative, right?
Given that a move of the Lounge habitants to Phuket would involve all but Woody, it follows that a move en masse to Markland Wood would still involve all but one habitant (me).
The costs would be largely unchanged except for the two previously-mentioned habitants.
Also, we haven't had a tsunami here in years!
Our supply of "the electric" is un-interrupted, except in summer-time when all the wimps turn on their air-conditioners.
