    Help, I deleted a Custom Command . . how do I get (Word 2007)

Greetings, new to Woody's and needing help.

Here's the situation. Have a custom template that is added to all our Word installations. Copied to cocuments and Settings%username%Application DataMicrosoftWordSTARTUP as usual.

Yesterday I had already placed a fresh copy of the custom.dot in the proper folder then ran the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. This added a second copy custom1.dot and there were duplicate commands in the Add-Ins tab. The user started to delete the duplicate commands and got the ominous warning . . .

Are you sure you want to delete this custom command. It cannot be recovered if deleted.

She had only deleted one command when I stopped her then removed the duplicate .dot and restarted Word.
As warned, the deleted command is gone. ok I thought I could just replace the custom.dot and restore the missing command. No such luck.

Here's the thing. If I drag custom.dot out of the STARTUP folder and open it, the custom command is there. When I put it back in the STARTUP folder, it is not.

    Help?

    Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

Do you have a copy of the original version of the template? If so, copy that to the Startup folder (replacing the damaged version).

First thing I tried was to replace the custom.dot with a good copy.

The strange thing is, dragging it out of the STARTUP folder and opening custom.dot, the missing command shows. Put it back and start Word, it is gone. Where else is this controlled from. (Sorry, bad grammer - about to leave for the day.)

I don't understand that behavior. Does it persist after restarting the PC?

Could you attach a slimmed down version of the template (remove items that aren't relevant to the question), in a zip file? (You can't attach .dot files directly).

Thank you. That doesn't tell me much, I'm afraid. But it makes me think you're using a document management system. Is that correct? If so, it might well be related to your problem.

Yes, we use NetDocuments. This is a custom template from them and is installed on all our workstations. I'm sure I am just looking in the wrong place to restore this command.

Without seeing the template I can't offer further assistance.

I have no experience with document management systems, but there are other Loungers who do, perhaps one of them will be able to help.

I've had tremendous problems with code for creating and deleting command bars that I migrated to Word 2007. Duplication, triplication... I could not find a reliable fix.

    Re: Help, I deleted a Custom Command . . how do I

Yeah, this whole problem started because we opened Word and found duplicate commands in the Add-Ins toolbar / tab / ribbon what ever you call it. But that problem was easily fixed when I found two template files in the STARTUP folder (custom.dot and custom1.dot).
Maybe I need to learn how to create custom commands in the first place, then I will know how to replace the missing one. Or at least turn it back on.
