    unconnect from internet (Vista)

My mother-in-law bought a new computer and I was upgrading it. The disconnect window came up and ask to stay connected or disconnect. Knowing it was going to take a long time over a dial up connection, I disabled it. She wants it back now and I can't find were to go to bring it back up. Please help! Thanks

Check the settings in Internet Explorer Tool | Internet options | Connections.

I went into Internet Explorer's tools, option and couldn't find anything to bring back the disconnect window that comes up when you close Explorer or Windows Live Mail. Any other ideals or help? Thanks

I'm not computer savy, I can't post pictures. What am I looking for? I've got dial-up settings options with settings tab. Never dial a connection, dial whenever a network connection is not present, and always dial my network connection options. And LAN settings. Thanks

Click on the Settings button on the Connections tab and tell us what the settings are.

    Re: unconnect from internet (Vista)

Ok, what you gave us is the information from her Connections tab. What I was looking for is the information when you click the Settings button on that tab (see Screenshot). Mine is greyed out in the screenshot because I use broadband internet. It should be accessable on her system. Please click that button and give us the information from the window that comes up.

I haven't used dialup in quite awhile, but suspect that the setting you are looking for is part of the ISP's software. AOL used to have the same "feature" to disconnect inactive users. You might want to call the ISP's 24 hour support line and ask them if the setting is in their software. You can reach them at......

I went into that setting you have the arrow pointing at, and* didn't see anything that I thought was what I wanted. I am under the impression that it is apart of Internet Explorer and mail. I know years ago when I had dialup, it too had the disconnect window and I had a different service provider. When I get over there I will get the settings. Thanks

    Re: unconnect from internet (Vista)

I did a little more poking around and found a suggestion on another forum that it might be a setting for your modem. I checked my modem's properties and found a setting that might be what you are looking for. I'm running XP Pro, but I don't think that will matter for this.

Click the Start menu, click Control Panel, click System and Maintenance and click Device Manager. Scroll down to Modems and click the + and then right click on the modem that is displayed and select Properties. From this point on it is going to be difficult for me to direct you because the modem on her system is likely different from mine. The setting on mine was on the Advanced tab, an option to "Change Default Settings" opened a window where I found a box to check to set the disconnect time option that on mine is not checked and I suspect that it's the same on your mother's system. Check the box and set the time she wants and that should give her back the disconnect option she wants. <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

Her modem is a PCI SoftData Fax Modem with SmartCP. It has all the setting options you show. I could set it to unhook at a certain set minutes, but she wants back the window option where she can unhook immediately when she shuts down the Browser or e-mail. Thanks

Follow the instructions found here for the "Windows Standard Dialer", substituting her ISP for the Toast.net reference.
