how do you create a toolbar in Word 2007? (Word 2007)

    Hello

My office is about to migrate to Word 2007 from Word 2000. In Word 2000, I have a custom toolbar with a menu item which stores about 20 macros which are in a global template. Can I recreate the same thing in Word 2007 and if so how? I don't have a full understanding of that Ribbon yet. Can you create your own toolbars still?

I don't have Office 2007 so the following may not be entirely correct.

My understanding is that you can't create custom toolbars in Word 2007. You can use the Quick Access Toolbar instead - see Customize the Quick Access Toolbar.

There are third-party tools that restore toolbars - see ToolbarToggle, and tools that make it easier to customize the ribbon - see RibbonCustomizer™.

You can't create a "toolbar" in Word 2007, but you can, if you have a lot of patience, create or edit the Ribbon in Word 2007.

I couldn't even begin to explain how in a posting (partly because it's a lot of fiddling and partly because others can explain it more competently) but there are a few places to get more information. Here are a couple of links to get you started:

    The last one is a hands-on demo of editing the Ribbon. It ain't for sissies... <img src=/S/bananas.gif border=0 alt=bananas width=33 height=35>

Toolbars belonging to legacy (.dot) templates are grouped together on the ribbon under Add-ons. This takes them a further click away from the user, but getting controls into the "Home" tab might be more trouble than it is worth...

    Jefferson, you're right.

I was so focused on the original question... .

Giulia, simply put the template with your toolbar into Word's Startup folder. You'll need to maintain an earlier version of Word if you want to add or remove a button, but any macros can be edited in Word 2007.

You can also add a legacy toolbar or menu to the Quick Access Toolbar:

Click the down arrow at the right end of the QAT.
    Choose More Commands
At the top of the left side of the Word Options > Customize dialog, click the down arrow next to Popular Commands
    Choose All Commands
Scroll down to Custom Toolbars and add it to the QAT.
    Click OK.

Now your toolbar will be accessible both from the Add-Ins tab and the QAT.

Re: how do you create a toolbar in Word 2007?

    Kim,

Wow! I didn't know you could add the whole custom toolbars section to the QAT. I try to only put on the QAT things that I want to use no matter what ribbon is showing (like the show/hide pilcrow and the style). I've added some of the toolbar macros (with new button images) to the QAT, but your suggestion is better. Now I can view all of the toolbar buttons (with their original shapes) without moving away from the ribbon I'm using. That will be a big help. Thank you so much.

I'm here to testify.... I use a custom toolbar from Word 2003 in 2007 as part of the Add In Ribbon. It works fine. It is a bit of a PITA to make any changes, but it seems to work fine.
