    Ashampoo New Version 8

A few days ago I got a very "erroneous" email from them with this subject: "Your personal upgrade offer for Burning Studio 6"

Since I already am running version 7.21 I figured there must be a typo involved so I went to the upgrade link provided. You see, I'm a sucker for $10 upgrade offers for a pretty "major" piece of software! Sure enuf, the new offer is for a $10 upgrade to their version 8 product, which may or may not be to your liking. It looks to me like the DVD slideshows is the biggest thing they write about and I'm just now installing my copy so I can't say if there's much new to holler about. BUT I will say that I've been much more satisfied with this product than I ever was with Nero!

I don't know if new buyers can get the $10 price I did, but here's the link to the software page: AshampooŽ Burning Studio 8

    Al,

I jumped onboard when Ashampoo sent me an upgrade offer when it was pre-release for some ridiculously low cost. I installed it and then about 2 weeks later the public release came out which I then installed over the top of the Beta without issue. It has a few new features which I probably won't use including the new "Label Maker" which they have included. I too like Ashampoo very much. There has only been one instance where Ashampoo didn't do something which Nero did better. But otherwise, it has been great. I've been using it since version 5 and don't plan on looking back.

Ashampoo also sent me an offer for a pre-release of their newest program; a 3-D CAD for $29.95.

I'm a disgruntled Nero user. What I don't like is the persistence Nero has with auto-start , background apps. I've read everything possible, made recommended registry tweaks, unticked the tick boxes - but it doesn't matter. Reboot my machine and Nero starts up an indexing service or something else. I want to be able to start and stop an application at will and as needed.

Does Ashampoo behave differently? Does it insists on starting up an indexing service, an auto updater (phone home) or Nero Scout type application? When you choose to exit the application, does it leave remnants running in it's wake? I'd make the switch today if I was sure it would behave on my PC.

    Thanks,

Ashampoo has no "indexing service", e.g., Nero Scout.

Nero Scout has been a PITA since it was introduced, but almost immediately it was discovered that it can be disabled easily by doing the following:

To remove Nero Scout, just execute this: Start > Run > regsvr32 /u "%COMMONPROGRAMFILES%AheadLibMediaLibraryNSE.d ll"

I just took a look in MSCONFIG to verify that Ashampoo version 8 starts nothing when you boot the machine. I had to laugh though, for way, way down at the bottom of the list where all the un-checked entries get sorted is a residual Nero entry for a program called NeroCheck.Exe. I double checked my drive and I have NO remaining vestiges of Nero, so I see I have a reg edit to do. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
